Another game, another milestone: Two games after reaching 1,500 career points, Meagan Cowher became just the third player in Princeton women's basketball history to have three seasons with more than 400 points. Already the single-season record holder with 496 last year, Cowher joins Sandi Bittler '90 and Claire Tomasiewicz '79 with three 400-point seasons.
Record chase: Meagan Cowher had a 20-point game Saturday at Brown (24) for the first time since scoring 20 at Monmouth Jan. 2. That leaves her 143 points short of breaking the career points record (Sandi Bittler '90, 1,683) and seven games in which to score those points, necessitating a 20.4 ppg average. Cowher is currently averaging 17.5 points per game, but does have eight games of 20 points or better this season.
Free throw record: Meagan Cowher had seven free throws last weekend to move to 314 for her career. She is in third place on the Princeton career list behind Cornielle Burt '92 (326) and Jennifer Donnelly '88 (349). Cowher is now second on the list of free throws attempted, at 476, behind only Donnelly at 544.
Longevity: Ali Prichard has the chance to tie the Princeton record for most games played. If Prichard plays the nine games left in the regular season, she will equal Andrea Razi '96 at 109 total games played.
Welcome to my new home: Saturday will be Dartmouth's first visit to Jadwin Gym with Courtney Banghart as coach. Banghart, a 2000 Dartmouth grad, played four seasons for the Big Green under Chris Wielgus and was an assistant coach for four more through last season.
Don't give it away: Princeton commits a league-low 16.2 turnovers per game and has not had a 20-turnover game since Dec. 5, 2007, when it had 22 giveaways against NJIT. Princeton's turnover average is ranked 59th in Division I as of Feb. 17, its highest ranking in any statistical category.
Downs is up: Junior Whitney Downs had two new significant career bests last weekend. Against Yale, Downs had eight rebounds and followed it at Brown with 19 points.
Scoring leaders: Thanks in big part to Meagan Cowher's 24-point effort Saturday at Brown, she now leads the Ivy League in scoring not only overall but when looking at league games only as well. The Ivy League bases its scoring champion on those 14 league games, and Princeton has had the last two such champions. Becky Brown '06 won two years ago and Cowher won last season. In the overall rankings, Cowher leads Yale's Melissa Colborne 17.5 points per game to 15.2. In league-only rankings, Cowher is ahead of Colborne 16.9 ppg to 15.1.
Cowher in the NCAA rankings: Meagan Cowher is Princeton's only individual in the NCAA rankings with her 17.5 points per game ranking 50th in Division I as of Feb. 17.
Tigers for threeeee: Princeton attempted 10 three-pointers at Yale and 15 at Brown, bringing its streak of attempting a double-digit number of three-pointers to 24 games. The high for this year was 29 threes attempted against Syracuse, making a season-high 12.
Double-digit streak: By reaching double-digits in scoring against Yale and Brown, Meagan Cowher has scored at least 10 points in her last 26 games.
Watch the game, listen to the game: Princeton women's basketball is scheduled to broadcast all 30 games free of charge at www.GoPrincetonTigers.com. Video of home games and select away games is also available for a subscription. Derek Jones will once again be courtside for both of this weekend's games.
Think Pink: Princeton will join more than 700 schools and organizations taking part in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's “Think Pink” event Saturday against Dartmouth. The Tigers will wear pink jerseys and fans, who will gain free admission by wearing pink, will have the opportunity to take part in a silent auction with proceeds being donated to local agencies that assist in the fight against breast cancer.
Race for the title: The Crimson also split last weekend but suffered a setback in their Ivy League title pursuit with an 85-61 loss at Cornell. Both Harvard and Cornell won the next day against their respective opponents, keeping the Crimson one game behind the Big Red in the Ivy League standings. The teams will meet again Mar. 1 at Harvard. With Cornell at 7-1 and Harvard at 6-2, Dartmouth is right behind at 5-3.
Triple-double: Harvard has three players averaging 10 points per game in Lindsay Hallion (10.6), Emily Tay (10.5) and Katie Rollins (10.5). Dartmouth has two in Koren Schram (11.3) and Brittney Smith (10.4).
Award candidates?: It could be a matchup of Ivy League Player of the Year versus Ivy League Rookie of the Year when Meagan Cowher and Dartmouth's Brittney Smith meet up, if scoring averages are given primary weight. Cowher leads the league in scoring both overall and in Ivy games, and Smith is the league's top scoring freshman by both measures.
Last time against Harvard: Princeton and Harvard got together Feb. 2 at Lavietes Pavilion across the Charles River from Cambridge and the Crimson led wire-to-wire. Harvard had a 28-25 advantage with eight minutes to go before halftime and went on a 17-0 run to balloon the lead to 20. Harvard didn't allow the lead to drop below 16 after that.
Last time against Dartmouth: Princeton and Dartmouth met Feb. 1 in Hanover. Dartmouth's lead was just two points with six minutes to play but a 10-0 run put the lead at 12 with less than four minutes left. The Tigers didn't get closer than nine points after that.
