PRINCETON ? A late first-half run by Dartmouth gave the Big Green a lead the Princeton women's basketball team could not overcome Saturday evening at Jadwin Gym as the visitors prevailed, 72-60.
Meagan Cowher led the Tigers with 18 points and Caitlin O'Neill joined her in double-figures with 10, but Princeton fell to 5-20 overall and 2-7 in Ivy League play. Dartmouth kept pace in the Ivy race, improving to 10-14 and 7-3 in the league.
Saturday was also Princeton's participation in "Think Pink," a national event sponsored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to support the fight against breast cancer. Fans who wore pink gained free admission and saw the Tigers wear special pink jerseys for the event.
For the first half, Dartmouth outshot Princeton better than 2 to 1, hitting 57.9 percent of its shots to Princeton's 24.1 percent. The Tigers were within four near the midway point of the half, down 17-13 with 10:58 to play. But Dartmouth went on a 16-4 run to push a lead that grew as large as 18 before the break. After a three-pointer by Princeton's Jessica Berry, Dartmouth's halftime lead was 35-20.
Princeton got no closer than 10 points after halftime. The Tigers reached that point on four occasions, the last of which came with 3:49 left and Dartmouth holding a 66-56 lead. The Big Green, however, scored the next six points to end Princeton's last threat.
Dartmouth won the rebounding battle 42-21, though the Tigers had a season-low nine turnovers.
Princeton will have its last two home games of the season next Friday and Saturday against Brown and Yale. The Tigers will then end the 2007-08 campaign with three road games at Columbia, Cornell and Penn.
