Sam Loch '06 Selected To Australian 8+ For 2008 Summer Olympics
February 26, 2008 | Heavyweight Rowing
While at Princeton, Sam Loch '06 helped lead the Princeton men's heavyweight crew to one of its best years ever. Wins at the head of the Charles and the Royal Henley surrounded an Ivy League championship and a national second-place finish. Loch will try to lead Australia to similar success, as he was selected to the 8+ for the upcoming Summer Olympics in Beijing.
“Sam was a great college rower and part of the very successful Class of '06 here at Princeton," former head coach Curtis Jordan said. "It's not easy making any country's Olympic Team; the Australians are particularly deep and competitive. We are very proud of his hard work and success.”
Australia took the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Games. The gold medal went to the United States, which included former Princetonian
Chris Ahrens '98. Overall, Princeton had six rowers compete at the Athens Games. Tom Hershmiller '01 and Lianne Bennion Nelson '95 also reached the medal stand; both earned silver. The 2008 U.S. squads have not yet been named.
The 2008 Olympic opening ceremonies will take place Aug. 8.
