Brunner Leads Princeton to Two Dramatic Wins

SAN DIEGO - Freshman Lauren Brunner was the hero twice for the 20th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team on Saturday. In the morning against CSU-Bakersfield she scored with 11 seconds remaining in regulation time to lift Princeton to a win, and in the afternoon, she scored in overtime to beat 15th-ranked UC San Diego.
Princeton began the day with a 10-9 win over CSU-Bakersfield. Princeton fell behind the Roadrunners 3-1 after the first quarter, but outscored CSUB 3-2 in each of the remaining three quarters to erase the early deficit and take the lead. Princeton was within a goal at half time and had drawn even at 7-7 after three periods.
Sophomore Phoebe Champion scored four times to lead the Princeton offense and she now has six goals in two games at the SDSU tournament. She has 17 goals for the season. Sophomore Helen Meigs added three goals and how has 14 for the year. Princeton senior goalkeeper Natalie Kim made 13 saves for the win.

The Tigers were back in the water in the afternoon in a battle of ranked teams and won a thrilling defensive battle by a 5-4 score in the third overtime.
Princeton went ahead 2-1 after the first quarter and led 3-2 at the half. From that point, neither team was able to score as both defensives tightened up. UCSD finally drew even at 3-3 with 23 seconds left in regulation when Sydney Gstettenbauer scored to force overtime.
The Tritons scored the first goal of overtime with a goal in the first extra session, but Princeton scored in the second session to send the game to sudden death overtime. It was in the third overtime session that Brunner scored her second goal of the game and her 14th goal of the season with 1:10 left in the period to lift the Tigers to the 5-4 win. Sophomore Lauren Sabb and freshmen Tanya Wolcox and Julie Phillips also scored for Princeton and senior Natalie Kim was exceptional in goal, making 18 saves.
Princeton improved to 10-5 with the two wins and returns to action tomorrow at the Aztec Invitational with games against San Diego State and Colorado State.
