Pacific Takes Two from Princeton Softball
March 19, 2008 | Softball
STOCKTON, Calif. -- A pair of Pacific pitchers cooled the Princeton softball team's bats Wednesday as the Tigers fell 6-1 and 3-2 in a doubleheader in Stockton, Calif.
Princeton (3-11) managed three hits in the first game and one in game two, going without a hit into the seventh inning of the nightcap before a Kelsey Quist double with one out.
Pacific 6, Princeton 1
Pacific (18-16) scored all six of its runs from the third inning forward to overcome an early Princeton lead and win the opener, 6-1.
Princeton pulled ahead when Kelsey Quist doubled home a Kathryn Welch walk with two outs in the first, but Pacific's Chelsea Engle held Princeton's batters mostly quiet after that.
Pacific tied the game in the third with back-to-back one-out singles before a leadoff home run in the fourth pulled Pacific ahead 2-1.
Pacific added two each in the fifth and the sixth for a 6-1 lead. The two fifth-inning runs came via a pair of singles and a sun-aided dropped fly ball in centerfield that kept the inning alive. The following frame, Pacific knocked three straight two-out hits, capped by a two-run double.
Kristen Schaus (1-9) took the loss for Princeton, giving up nine hits and striking out three. Engle (12-6) struck out 11 Princeton batters and allowed just three hits, none coming after the second inning.
Pacific 3, Princeton 2
Pacific's Alyce Jorgenson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Kelsey Quist had a one-out double to end Jorgenson's bid. One batter earlier, Kathryn Welch was hit by a pitch as Princeton's second runner of the game and first since the fourth inning.
Welch scored on a wild pitch and Jamie Lettire's groundout to second allowed Quist to score, but Princeton couldn't close the gap. The loss was Princeton's fifth one-run defeat of the season.
Princeton's Michelle Tolfa (1-1) took the loss, giving up four hits and striking out three. Jorgenson (3-5) struck out eight in her one-hit win.
Pacific got all three of its runs in the second inning, capitalizing on two singles, one knocking home two runs, and three walks, one forcing home another run.
Princeton will face BYU in a single game Thursday at 11 a.m. PT.
