Final Squashers Fall Short Of National Finals
March 02, 2008 | Women's Squash
The four remaining Princeton squash competitors all fell short of Sunday's national championship matches in Annapolis, Md. The men placed two in the semifinals, as both No. 1 Mauricio Sanchez and No. 2 Kimlee Wong won their respective quarterfinals, but both were knocked out by Trinity rivals. The final Princeton woman, Neha Kumar, fell to eventual finalist Miranda Ranieri of Yale.
Sanchez, the overall No. 2 seed, defeated freshman teammate David Letourneau 9-3, 9-0, 9-2 in his quarterfinal round to advance to his third consecutive national semifinal. Wong reached his first semifinal with a 2-9, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4 over Harvard No. 1 Colin West. Both would face their inverse Trinity opponents, as Wong took on Trinity No. 1 Baset Chaudhry and Sanchez took on No. 2 Gustav Detter. Chaudhry remained undefeated on the season with a 9-2, 9-1, 9-3 victory over Detter, but the second semifinal would prove to be much tougher. Two of the fittest players in the nation put on a marathon four-game match, and it was Detter who came away with a 9-5, 3-9, 10-9, 9-8 victory over Sanchez, who battled cramping during the match.
Following the dramatic 2008 national team championship at Jadwin Gym, the women's team was unable to win a matching individual championship. Kumar was close in all three games, but she lost 9-6, 9-7, 9-7 to Ranieri.
