Wisconsin's Seventh-Inning Homer Spoils End to Softball's Spring Trip
March 23, 2008 | Softball
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Wisconsin spoiled what would have been a high note to the end of the Princeton softball team's spring break trip, hitting a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Tigers 3-2 in Stanford's tournament.
It was Princeton's (3-17) seventh one-run loss of the season and sixth on a spring trip that saw the Tigers win one of 13 games.
The Tigers built a 2-0 lead with runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Kathryn Welch crushed a fourth-inning leadoff double just short of the fence in left-center and came home on a two-out single down the left-field line by Jamie Lettire to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth.
Princeton added its second run in the seventh when Erin Miller knocked a one-out single to right-center and took the next three bases on a sacrifice sandwiched between two wild pitches.
But Wisconsin (10-21) needed just three batters in the seventh inning to turn a positive ending to the trip for the Orange and Black into a heartbreaker. Following a leadoff walk and a double that put runners at second and third with nobody out, Valyncia Raphael hit a three-run home run to centerfield to win the game.
The victory was Wisconsin's second one-run comeback win over the Tigers on the weekend. Friday, Princeton scored a run in the first inning only to have Wisconsin score two in the fifth for a 2-1 win.
Kristen Schaus (1-11) struck out five and gave up five hits, walking two. Princeton outhit the Badgers 6-5 with six Tigers splitting the hits.
Princeton improved to 4-16 on the season and will start Ivy League play Saturday and Sunday at Class of 1895 Field with Dartmouth and Harvard.
