March 08, 2008 | Women's Basketball
ITHACA, N.Y. -- An early blitz by Cornell put the Princeton women's basketball team in catch-up mode the entire way Saturday night as the Big Red won 76-59.
Princeton fell to 7-22 on the season and 4-9 in the Ivy League while the Big Red not only improved to 11-3 in league play but got good news from Yale as the Bulldogs defeated Harvard to force at least a playoff for the Ivy's bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Cornell had a 24-4 lead with 11:37 to play in the first half and the Tigers got no closer than 13 the rest of the period. The Big Red took a 19-point lead into the locker room on the strength of 62.1 percent shooting and eight players making a field goal in the first 20 minutes.
Meagan Cowher led Princeton with 26 points, giving her 1,640 for her career and moving her past Claire Tomasiewicz '79 for second place on the school's career scoring list. Sandi Bittler '90 is the all-time leading scorer with 1,683 points.
Cowher scored 24 of her 26 points after the break, but the Tigers couldn't get closer than 12 in the second half. Jessica Berry joined Cowher in double figures with 12 points.
Jeomi Maduka led Cornell with 18 points. Cornell outshot Princeton only 46.6 percent to 46.0 percent, but the Big Red cleaned up on the glass, 39-24. Cornell also won the turnover battle, 13-8.
The Tigers will wrap up their season Tuesday at The Palestra against Penn.
