Former Co-Captain Ben Brielmaier Signs With CFL's Toronto Argonauts
April 10, 2008 | Football
Former Princeton football co-captain Ben Brielmaier '06, who helped Princeton to a 7-3 record in his final season, signed Thursday with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, it was announced by the team. Brielmaier came to Princeton as a defensive lineman and left as an All-Ivy offensive tackle who would sign with one NFL team and play a full season in NFL Europe.
Brielmaier was a significant contributor on the defensive line as a sophomore, but with needs to fill on the offensive line, he made the transition prior to the 2004 season. The move paid off quickly, as Brielmaier would start his final 20 games on the offensive line and helped Princeton to a 12-8 record in the two years. As a senior, he was voted co-captain and helped Princeton to its best record in a decade. He also led the Tigers to wins at both Harvard and Penn, which ended long losing streaks against both programs. Along with his fellow classmates, Brielmaier helped lay the foundation for the historic 2006 season, when Princeton won nine games for the first time since 1964 and claimed the program's ninth Ivy League championship.
Following his senior season, Brielmaier signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent. Although he didn't make the final roster, he continued his football career in the now-defunct NFL Europe by playing the entire 2007 season with the Frankfurt Galaxy. Brielmaier now heads to training camp with the Argonauts, who won the 2007 CFL East Division with an 11-7 regular-season record.
