Heavyweights Retain Childs Cup With Victory On The Schuylkill
April 12, 2008 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Princeton heavyweights retained the historic Childs Cup by winning a close varsity eight race and also earned big victories in the other three races Saturday as the Tigers competed against Columbia and Penn on a choppy Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The Tigers' first varsity was in a fight with the Lions throughout the 2,000 meters into a headwind, but Princeton crossed the line just one second ahead of Columbia in 5:50.1. Penn was well behind in 6:06.9.
Princeton's frosh/novice eight was equally as impressive, winning by nearly 14 seconds over Columbia in 6:11.8, while the second varsity eight had nearly a 13-second win in a head-to-head battle with Columbia.
In the first race of the day, the third varsity boat from Princeton finished in 6:30.8, nearly five seconds ahead of Penn.
Princeton races against Harvard and MIT next weekend in Boston.
