April 13, 2008 | Baseball
NEW YORK -- Columbia rallied late in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Princeton baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Andy Coakley Field. Columbia took the opener 3-1, and then took the nightcap by a 7-5 score.
Game 1
John Baumann allowed a run on three hits to stymie the Tiger 3-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior Micah Kaplan was responsible for the lone Princton run in the game when he hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Columbia scored the game's first run in the second inning when Mike Malfettone scored on a passed ball. Princeton evened the score with Kaplan's blast an inning later, but the Lions scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the win.
In the fifth, Alex Ferrara scored from second on a Henry Perkins single and an inning later Noah Cooper plated Mike Roberts for an insurance run.
Baumann got the win with seven innings of work. Sophomore David Hale took the loss for Princeton, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings.
Game 2
Columbia took the nightcap after rallying from a 4-2 deficit with five runs in the seventh inning. Senior Spencer Lucian had three hits and junior Adrian Turnham drove in two runs.
Princeton went up early with three runs in the first inning. Junior Derek Beckman hit a leadoff double and scored on a Turnham double. A single from sophomore Jack Murphy scored Turnham and Murphy came home on a run-scoring groundout from sophomore David Hale.
Columbia got two of the runs back in the second inning when Noah Cooper hit a two-run blast to right field. Princeton got one of those back in the fifth inning when a Turnham groundout plated Beckman.
The score stayed at 4-2 until the seventh when Columbia broke through with five runs to take its first lead of the game. Mike Roberts hit a two-run single to tie the game and Dean Forthun ripped a two-run triple to right to put the Lions ahead. The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch. Princeton got one run back in the eighth when senior Micah Kaplan hit a sac fly.
Bill Purdy got the complete game win for Columbia after allowing five runs on 13 hits in nine innings. Senior Steven Miller allowed three runs in six innings and freshman Dan Barnes took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in the final two innings.
