Seton Hall Defeats Baseball 8-4
April 15, 2008 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- Seton Hall scored three runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to four runs in an 8-4 win over the Princeton baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Junior Jack Murphy and senior Spencer Lucian drove in runs for the Tigers.
The Pirates jumped to an early lead with three runs in its first at bat before the Tigers came to the plate. Seton Hall strung together two hits with two Tiger errors to push three runs across and take a lead it would not relinquish.
Princeton got one run back in both the third and fourth innings to cut the lead to 3-2. In the third, junior Andrew Doupe scored on a wild pitch after walking, and in the fourth, Murphy scored on a wild pitch after walking.
Seton Hall reopened its lead in its next at bat with three runs to make the lead 6-2. Chris Affinito, Dan Lopez and Matt Skopak each had RBI-singles in the inning. Seton Hall then added an unearned run in the sixth inning to make the lead 7-2.
Princeton cut the lead to 7-4 with two runs in the eighth inning and threatened more but a great play in the outfield by Seton Hall's Matt Smedberg quelled Princeton rally. Junior Dan DeGeorge was hit by a pitch and junior Adrian Turnham singled to put two on with no outs. Murphy then doubled to left to score DeGeorge and push Turnham to third. Turnham scored on a Lucian groundout to make the score 7-4. Walks to senior Micah Kaplan and Doupe then loaded the bases for sophomore Noel Gonzales-Luna, who hit a sinking fly ball to left field, that Smedberg grabbed while diving towards the foul line for the final out of the inning.
Seton Hall added a final run in the top of the ninth.
Corey Young got the win for Seton Hall in relief while sophomore Langford Stuber took the loss for Princeton following five innings in which he allowed six runs on four hits.
Princeton returns to action this weekend for a pair of Ivy League doubleheaders at home against Penn.
