Princeton Claims Southern Championship on Meigs' Buzzer Beater
April 19, 2008 | Women's Water Polo
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Princeton women's water polo team claimed its fourth Southern Championship in five years and regained a title that eluded it in 2007 when sophomore Helen Meigs scored in the final seconds of overtime to lift the Tigers to a 10-9 win at Bucknell on Saturday night.
Princeton began its day with a 10-4 win over Maryland in the semifinals. Princeton never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after a quarter. Up 3-1 at the half, the Tigers blew the game open with a five goal third quarter to pull ahead 8-2 and won by a 10-4 final. Freshman Julie Phillips led the offense with three goals, but senior Natalie Kim was the star in goal, making 18 saves in three and a half quarters to seal the Princeton win.
Princeton 2 1 5 2 - 10
Maryland 0 1 1 2 - 4
Princeton Goals: Phillips 3, Champion 2, Brunner 1, Jacobson 1, Meigs 1, Sabb 1, Schelegle 1
Princeton Saves: Kim 18 (3.5 quarters), Michel 2 (.5 quarters)
The Tigers met top-seeded Bucknell in the evening's championship match and the Tigers pulled out a 10-9 win in overtime. The two teams were separated by one goal or tied for 34:48 of the 38 minutes played in the hard-fought contest between teams that split the regular-season series, with each winning its home game by a one-goal margin.
Bucknell led 7-6 after three quarters, but the Tigers evened the score at 7-7 with 3:48 left in the final period on sophomore Phoebe Champion's goal. Neither team scored in the final few minutes and the game went to overtime deadlocked at seven.
In the first overtime session, Bucknell went ahead with two goals and looked to be in good shape, but the Tigers rallied in the second session to draw even and ultimately win the game on a buzzer beater. Freshman Tanya Wilcox moved Princeton within a goal with a 6-meter lob shot with 2:23 to go and then junior Claire Jacbson evened the score with 32 seconds remaining.
Bucknell drew a 5-meter shot with 14 seconds left but Kim was able to block the scoring attempt. Princeton promptly called timeout to run a set play in the remaining time. The play as designed did not work, but Meigs found herself with the ball as time clicked down and scored on a 5-meter lob shot just as the final horn sounded to give Princeton the 10-9 victory.
Princeton 2 1 3 1 0 3 - 10
Bucknell 2 2 3 0 2 0 - 9
