April 30, 2008 | Baseball
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Princeton baseball team jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 14-3 win at Rider in its final game of the 2008 season. Sophomore David Hale had two hits, including a grand slam in the second inning, and sophomore Langford Stuber picked up his second win of the season.
Princeton got on the board early with two runs in the first inning as junior Derek Beckman scored the first of his three runs on the afternoon on a groundout and junior Dan DeGeorge scored on sophomore Jack Murphy's single after DeGeorge reached on a double.
Rider got a run back in the bottom of the first but Princeton broke the game open with eight runs on the second, despite just one hit in the inning. Seven of the first eight batters in the inning were either walked or hit by a pitch. There was a sac fly in the mix was well. Hale, who led off the inning with a walk and came around to score, came to bat for the second time in the inning as this time homered to left center for the grand slam.
Up 10-1, the Tigers added three more runs in the third inning when senior Micah Kaplan hit a leadoff home run and senior Spencer Lucian doubled in a pair when the bases were loaded. The final Tiger run came in the fourth inning when Beckman's double plated sophomore Jon Broscious.
Stuber got the win following five good innings in which he allowed a run on seven hits. Freshman Dan Barnes pitched 3.2 innings allowing two runs and striking out five. Senior Steven Miller got the final out.
The win ends Princeton's season at 20-22.
