Softball Tigers Pop Four More in Twinbill Sweep at Yale
April 05, 2008 | Softball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Four players hit home runs for the Princeton softball team in an 8-1, 5-2 sweep at Yale Saturday, giving the Orange and Black 12 round-trippers in six Ivy League games and, not coincidentally, a 6-0 league record.
Princeton 8, Yale 1 (Game 1)
Kristen Schaus and Michelle Tolfa combined for a three-hit effort in the opener, as the Princeton bats provided plenty of run support in an 8-1 win.
Schaus (3-11) threw the first four innings, giving up just two hits. Her only jam came in the third inning, when a pair of walks and two infield errors loaded the bases with none out. Schaus, however, gave up only one unearned run and allowed Yale to cut the Princeton deficit only to 4-1.
The Tigers had taken a 4-0 lead in the top half of the third on a Megan Weidrick RBI double and a three-run shot by Kelsey Quist. Kristin Arguedas had an RBI double in the fourth and Kathryn Welch popped a solo shot to lead off the fifth as Princeton took a 6-1 lead. Jamie Lettire hit a two-run home run in the seventh to give Princeton its final two runs.
Schaus finished with two hits allowed in four innings, striking out six. Tolfa allowed just one baserunner in her three innings, coming on a fifth-inning double, while striking out three.
Princeton 5, Yale 2 (Game 2)
Tolfa returned to the circle in game two and had another solid effort, allowing
five hits in six innings before giving way to Lettire for the save in a 5-2 win.
Princeton manufactured a run in the first, moving leadoff hitter Brianna Moreno around for Quist to single her home.
Yale answered in the second on the help of two singles and a wild pitch, but Tolfa (4-3) settled in after allowing and stranding a leadoff triple. The rookie retired 12 of 14 batters she faced from that point.
Beth Dalmut provided the key game-breaking hit in the fourth to put the Tigers ahead for good. With two outs, Dalmut dropped a shallow fly ball between two Yale outfielders to score a pair of runs, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Megan Weidrick added a two-run home run the following inning, and the Tigers took a 5-1 advantage.
Yale cashed in a leadoff double in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Bulldogs got no closer.
The Tigers will look to complete a sweep of the Ivy North Sunday at Brown in a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader.
