Heavyweight Crew Earns Impressive Second-Place Finish At San Diego Crew Classic
April 06, 2008 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Princeton heavyweights made their 2008 trip to the San Diego Crew Classic an impressive one. Despite qualifying for Sunday's Copley Cup final with the sixth-best time, Princeton improved five spots to finish second overall in a loaded field. Defending national champion Washington won the event, but Princeton topped the likes of Harvard, Stanford and Cal in the final; all three of those teams placed in the top five at the 2007 IRA championships.
The Copley Cup, awarded to the winner of the Men's Collegiate Varsity Invitational division at the San Diego Crew Classic, was won by Washington in 5:39.90. Princeton, which opened its season last weekend with a home win over Georgetown, placed second in 5:41.80, while Harvard took third in 5:43.89. California placed fourth in 5:44.15 and Northeastern took fifth in 5:44.18. Stanford and Yale placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
With 13 teams in the field, Princeton needed a top-seven finish in Saturday's heats to reach the final. Although the Tigers placed fourth in the second heat with a time of 5:47.81, it would be enough to earn a spot in the final.
Princeton will make a much shorter road trip next weekend. The Tigers will head down to the Schuylkill River to compete for the Childs Cup against Penn and Columbia. The Tigers retained the Childs Cup, the nation's oldest intercollegiate racing trophy, last year.
