Monmouth Rallies for 7-3 Win at Princeton

PRINCETON -- Monmouth used three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and defeat the Princeton baseball team 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Sophomore Jack Murphy had four hits in the loss for Princeton.
Princeton jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning by taking advantage of two Monmouth errors. Junior Derek Beckman reached on an error and went to third after stealing second and advancing on the overthrow. He scored on a single from junior Adrian Turnham, then Turnham scored on senior Spencer Lucian's single.
Monmouth got a run back in the top of the second, but Princeton regained the two-run lead with a run in the third as Lucian doubled home Murphy. Lucian finished the game with three hits, two doubles and two RBIs. Princeton held onto the two-run lead until the seventh, when Monmouth recorded the first of its two three-run innings.
Sophomore Langford Stuber allowed a run on five hits in five innings for the Tigers. He was relieved in the sixth by freshman Matt Welsh, who took the losses, allowing three runs in two innings. Freshmen Matt Grabowski, Dan Barnes and Tim Feess all pitched in relief as well. Monmouth reliever Nick Vallillo got the win in relief following 4.1 innings of work after coming on for starter Brett Connor in the fifth inning.
Princeton drops to 12-15 with the loss while Monmouth is now 14-8. Princeton returns to Ivy action on Saturday for the first of two doubleheaders at Columbia.
