Men's Track Finishes Second At Ivy League Heptagonals
May 11, 2008 | Men's Track and Field
Princeton's second-place finish at the 2008 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at Yale's Dwyer Track featured yet another Heptagonal championship for senior All-America David Nightingale and several strong second-place finishes. The Tigers concluded the meet with 128 points, 50 points ahead of third-place Yale.
Nightingale's Heps championship came near the end of the meet in the 5,000 meters. He won by nearly three seconds over Harvard's Dan Chenoweth in an IC4A qualifying time of 14:28.85.
Princeton had two second-place finishers on the track Sunday, each of whom had big jumps from their preliminary times on Saturday. In the 400 meters, freshman Mike Eddy qualified sixth in 48.93 but ran a 47.31 on Sunday, an IC4A qualifying standard. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Tom Zozokos shaved more than a second off his Saturday time to run a 52.24, good for an NCAA regional qualifying mark.
In the field events, Justin Frick was second in the high jump competition just shy of the seven-foot mark, while Ian Fox gave Princeton five more points in that event with a third-place mark of 6' 6 1/2". In the discus, freshman George Abyad was a second-place finisher with a toss of 168 feet, three inches, accomplished on his frst attempt, while Joel Karacozoff gave the Tigers four more points in the event with a fourth-place throw of 161 feet.
Princeton also had a pair of third-place finishes on Sunday as senior James O'Toole ran a 3:47.45 for the 1,500 meters and senior Nick Crumpton had a nice mark of 50 feet, 6 3/4 inches in the triple jump.
In the 200 meters, Matt Brock was fourth in a time of 22.02. Tiger sprinter Shafiq Kashmiri was unable to compete in the 200 meters after injuring himself in the 100 meters earlier in the day.
Both Tiger relays finished in fourth place in IC4A qualifying times. The 4X100 group of Scott Henkelman, Dion Lehman, Ray Simnick and Kashmiri ran a 41.53, while the 4X400 group of Brian Li-A-Ping, Brock, Jordan Sawadogo and Eddy ran a time of 3:14.62.
Princeton also scored in the 110-meter hurdles thanks to a fifth-place finish by Chris Vasich (14.85), an IC4A qualifying mark. Brian Sharkey was a sixth-place finisher in the steeplechase in a time of 9:20.76.
