Open Women Place Fourth At Easterns; Novice 8s Claim Silver
May 18, 2008 | Women's Rowing - Open
The Princeton open women claimed fourth in the varsity eight grand final at the 2008 EAWRC championships, held Sunday at Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The best Princeton finish came in the novice eight competition, where the Tigers grabbed silver.
The varsity eight, which qualified for the grand final by winning the third semifinal heat, finished the grand final in 6:31.11. Brown won the EAWRC and Ivy League title in a time of 6:24.02, while Yale was edged out and placed second in 6:25.19. Radcliffe, which fell to Princeton in the regular season and the semifinal heat, picked up bronze in 6:30.55, less than one second ahead of Princeton.
The novice eight final expected to be a showdown between top-seeded Brown and second-seeded Princeton, and those two boats would make the end push in the grand final. The Bears held their top seed with a winning time of 6:44.97, while Princeton finished with silver in 6:49.98. The Tigers held off Cornell by nearly three seconds for second place in the final. Princeton and Brown have now won every novice eight grand final since the 2002 championships.
Both the varsity four and the novice four made grand finals, and the novice four earned a spot on the medal stand with a third-place time of 8:03.76. Columbia won the gold, while Penn edged out Princeton in 8:03.21. The varsity four placed fifth in 7:38.79.
Princeton's lone win in the afternoon session of the EAWRC championships came in the second varsity eight petite final, when Princeton topped Penn by eight seconds with a winning time of 6:48.28.
Princeton will now turn its focus to the 2008 NCAA Championships, held in Sacramento, Calif. The Tigers have been one of a select few programs to have been included in every NCAA Championship regatta since the inaugural one in 1997. Princeton won the 2008 varsity eight grand final in dominant fashion, and seniors Kristin Haraldsdottir (stroke) and Elizabeth Agnew (cox) were sophomores in that championship boat. The NCAA Championships will be held May 30-June 1.
