Men's Heavyweights Finish 10th Nationally; Novice Crew Claims Sixth
June 07, 2008 | Heavyweight Rowing
The final day of the heavyweight crew racing season didn't see a Princeton crew claim gold, but a grand-final finish by the novice eight may indicate a golden future. The varsity eight placed fourth in the petite final in 5:44.423, while the novice eight reached the grand final and placed sixth in 5:48.629.
The varsity eight fell short of the grand final during Friday's semifinal race on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. That sent the Tigers into the petite final, where Princeton finished behind Cornell, Brown and Yale in Saturday's competition. The finish in 5:44.423 did send Princeton past Harvard in that final race for both programs. Eastern champion Wisconsin topped Washington for the national title.
The novice eight, which lost only once during the regular season to Harvard, placed sixth in the grand final. California won the novice eight in 5:37.372, while Washington, Harvard and Yale finished second, third and fourth. Brown finished in 5:47.378 to claim fifth over Princeton.
Princeton also finished second in the second varsity eight petite final (6:04.523), fifth in the open four grand final (6:38.888) and second in the freshman four petite final (6:40.491). Princeton ends its 2008 campaign with a 6-2 record, a second-place finish in the Copley Cup final at the San Diego Crew Classic and a bronze medal at the Eastern Sprints.
