Early Goals Lift Women's Soccer to 2-0 Win at Colgate
September 23, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- After saving the excitement for the end of most of its games this season, the Princeton women's soccer team decided to get it done early Tuesday night at Colgate, scoring twice in the first three minutes for a 2-0 win.
The win ends a stretch of three games in five days for Princeton, which emerged undefeated during the span and stands at 3-1-1 on the season as it heads into Ivy League play Saturday at Yale.
"It was a good battle," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "We played really well for our third game in five days. I'm looking forward to getting Ivy games started."
Heading into Tuesday's game, Princeton hadn't scored earlier than the 72nd minute at any point this season.
Sarah Peteraf had her third goal of the season 36 seconds into the match on an assist from Kalie Bartholomew, who scored less than two minutes later for her second goal in as many games. Sunday at St. John's, Bartholomew saved a tie by scoring with two minutes left in regulation on a long-range attempt.
Sophomore goalkeeper Aly Pont needed to make only one save to secure her second shutout of the season as the Tigers outshot Colgate 10-3.
All three of Peteraf's goals this season have put Princeton ahead or have tied the game. Her first came against Boston University in the first game on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, squaring the game at 1-1. She scored in Princeton's next match in its new home last Friday night against Towson, giving the Tigers their first golden goal overtime win in three years.
Princeton's game against Yale will begin at 7 p.m. The Tigers will play at home next Tuesday, Sept. 30, against Fairfield.
