Men's Water Polo Defeats George Washington 11-9

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The 19th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team completed a weekend sweep by taking an 11-9 win in a physical battle at George Washington. Junior Mark Zalewski scored four goals as the Tigers won their fifth game in a row.
The Tigers and Colonials battled through all four quarters and the score remained tight throughout. While Princeton held a one-goal lead after a quarter, the score was back tied at the half with each team having scored seven goals. Princeton outscored George Washington 2-1 in the third quarter.The Tigers never trailed but George Washington was able to even the score at 9-9 before sophomore Matt Hale scored the game winner with four minutes left in the game. Junior Douglas Wigley would add an insurance goal.
and was able to pull ahead further in the fourth quarter to the 11-9 win.
Zalewski's four goals led all scorers in the game, while junior Eric Vreeland and Wigley each scored two goals. Sophomore Mike Merlone had another strong game in goal, making 14 saves. Merlone made a total of 40 saves over the three games over the weekend.
The win was Princeton's fifth in a row dating back to last weekend's ECAC Championships. Princeton is now 6-4 overall and is off to a 3-0 start in the CWPA Southern Division standings. Princeton has next weekend off and returns to action the following weekend in California. Princeton will visit top-ranked USC on Friday, Oct. 10 and will compete at the SoCal Tournament on the days that follow.
