Field Hockey Edges Richmond for Season-Opening Win
September 05, 2008 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. -- The 16th-ranked Princeton field hockey team started off the 2008 season with a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon against Richmond at Crenshaw Field. Senior Holly McGarvie and freshman Katie Reinprecht scored to give Princeton a 2-0 lead before Richmond trimmed the lead late.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday morning but was moved up to Friday afternoon in order to avoid the rain and wind associated with Tropical Storm Hanna. The teams avoided the wind on Friday but played much of the game in a constant rainfall.
Princeton controlled play territorially through much of the game, tripling Richmond in shots 21-7. Princeton also had nine corners in the game to Richmond's two. The Tigers opened the scoring in the game's 25th minute when McGarvie scored following a corner. McGarvie's goal was the 19th of her career, which leads all active Tigers. Classmate Kraftin Schreyer assisted on the goal.
The Tigers made the score 2-0 in the 47th minute when Katie Reinprecht notched her first collegiate goal unassisted. The goal proved to be the eventual game winner as the Tigers held on for the win despite a late Spider goal in the 62nd minute from Katelin Peterson.
Senior Candice Arner led Princeton with seven shots and four shots on goal. McGarvie and junior Kaitlyn Perrelle each had three shots in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer King made four saves for the win while Becca Weaver blocked seven shots in the loss.
The win moved Princeton to 1-0 on the season and was Princeton's first win in a season opener since defeating Virginia to open the 2003 campaign. Richmond fell to 1-2 with the loss. Princeton concludes the weekend on Sunday afternoon at William & Mary at 1 p.m.
