The 17th-ranked Princeton field hockey team will look to start the season 3-0 when it travels to Lehigh on Wednesday evening for a non-league game. Princeton, with wins in its first two games, is off to its best start in five seasons.
The Tigers got the 2008 season underway last weekend with two wins in the state of Virginia. Princeton started the weekend on Friday afternoon by edging Richmond 2-1 in a steady rainfall as the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna hit the Richmond area. Senior Holly McGarvie scored for the Tigers in the first half and freshman Katie Reinprecht gave the Tigers a two-goal lead 10 minutes into the second half. Richmond cut the lead in half with nine minutes left but could get no closer as the Tigers opened with a 2-1 win.
Two days later the storm had passed and Princeton met William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. In a game that was never in doubt, the Tigers scored three times in the first half on their way to a 4-0 shutout win. Junior Christina Bortz, the team's leading scorer a season ago, put Princeton ahead for good with a goal at 19:38 and McGarvie added her second of the year 1:19 later. Senior Candice Arner scored Princeton's third and fourth goals and sophomore Jennifer King made six saves for her first career shutout.
All eight Ivy League teams got their seasons underway last weekend. Columbia, which also topped William & Mary and Richmond, joins the Tigers as the league's only unbeaten teams. Penn, Brown, Cornell and Harvard are each 1-1, while Dartmouth and Yale are both 0-1. In other league action on Wednesday, Dartmouth hosts Northeastern, Yale hosts Connecticut and Penn hosts Saint Joseph's.
McGarvie and Arner sit atop the Tiger scoring charts with two goals and four points each. Bortz ranks third with a goal and an assist for three points. Katie Reinprecht also has a goal, while senior Sarah Reinprecht, senior Kraftin Schreyer and junior Kaitlyn Perrelle all have a single assist on the season. Arner leads the team with 12 total shots and eight shots on goal. Eighteen Tigers saw action this weekend.
McGarvie's goal at William & Mary was the 20th of her career, which is tops among active Princeton players by one over Bortz, who now has 19 with her goal against the Tribe. Bortz leads all active Tigers in points with 49.
In goal, King has put together two strong games, stopping 10 of the 11 shots she has faced for a .909 save percentage and a 0.50 goals-against average. She is 2-0 with a shutout.
The Tigers continue their season at Lehigh on Wednesday night. Princeton leads the all-time series with the Mountain Hawks 11-5-1 and has won the last eight meetings between the schools. Princeton is 5-2 in games played at Lehigh.
Lehigh is 1-2 this season with its lone win coming in its last game, a 4-1 win over Bryant on Saturday. Prior to that Lehigh suffered losses to Temple and West Chester. Lehigh has been outscored 9-6 this season. Kara Zweizig is Lehigh's leading scorer with two goals and an assist for five points.
Last season Princeton defeated Lehigh 4-2 at home on Oct. 17. In the game, Princeton scored the game's first four goals before Lehigh cut into the lead with two goals in the final seven minutes. Bortz had two goals and an assist in the contest with McGarvie and junior Katherine Cape added the other goals.
