The Princeton women's hockey team returns to action following a three-week layoff for the holidays. Princeton jumps right into ECAC Hockey action, playing games this weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth.
Princeton enters the New Year with a 7-8-1 overall and a 4-5-0 ECAC Hockey record. The Tigers are currently tied for sixth in the ECAC standings with Cornell and enter the second part of the season looking to climb in the standings as the Tigers sit just four points out of the final home ice playoff spot and five points out of first place in the standings. With 13 league games remaining, the Tigers sit five points behind a first-place tie between Dartmouth, Rensselaer and St. Lawrence, but only two spots ahead of eight-place Yale and Colgate, which represents the final playoff slot for the post season.
The Tigers will look to build off a good weekend the last time they played when they split a series at defending National Champion Minnesota-Duluth. Princeton took the opener of the series 4-3 before being shut out 3-0 in the second game. In the win, Princeton used goals from sophomore Sasha Sherry and freshman Julie Johnson to snap a 2-2 tie and pull ahead 4-2. UMD added a late goal but the Tigers held off the Bulldogs and got the win. Senior goaltender Kristen Young made 82 saves on the weekend in defending the Princeton goal.
Sherry continues to lead Princeton in points with 15 coming from six goals and nine assists. She has one more point than junior Melanie Wallace, who has three goals and a team-high 11 assists. Freshmen Paula Romanchuk and Danielle DiCesare have 13 and 11 points respectively and are tied for the team-lead with seven goals scored. Senior Christine Foster's 11 points complete the top five.
With its split at UMD, Princeton completed its non-conference slate at 3-3-1 with wins over Connecticut, Vermont and Minnesota-Duluth. All of Princeton's remaining games are against league opponents.
The Tigers start the weekend at Harvard looking to snap a four-game Crimson win streak in the series. Last year Harvard topped the Tigers in both games, winning 3-2 in Cambridge and 3-1 in Princeton. Princeton last defeated the Crimson in February of 2006. Harvard leads the all-time series with Princeton 35-25-2 overall and is 20-10-1 in the series at home.
Harvard is 5-5-3 overall this season and is 5-2-2 in ECAC play. The Crimson defeated Dartmouth 3-2 on Dec. 17 to snap a four-game winless skid and enter the holiday break with a win. Harvard has won just twice in its last nine games, going 2-5-2 in the span.
