Men's Track Faces Stiff Competition at Navy
January 22, 2009 | Men's Track and Field
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/22/08) ? The Princeton men's track and field team resumes action at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Annapolis, Md. The Tigers are one of six teams competing, along with Georgetown, La Salle, Maryland, Navy and Tennessee. The meet will take place at Navy's new track at the Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse beginning at 11 a.m.
Tennessee is perennially one of the top track teams in the country, and Georgetown is ranked No. 21 in the preseason poll thanks to its solid distance and middle distance corps. Maryland also has a strong team this season.
Senior Alex Pessala and sophomore Craig Pearce are expected to have strong showings in the weight throw. Pessala, who is ranked No. 16 nationally in the event, has already qualified provisionally for the NCAAs with a throw of 19.58 meters, while Pearce's best toss this season has reached 18.41 meters.
Junior Eric Plummer has also provisionally qualified in the shot put. He recorded 17.77 meters his last time out at the Navy Quad, besting his previous throw of 17.71 meters.
Freshman Dave Slovenski has won the pole vault event in each of his two tries this season. He reached a height of 5.12 meters at the Navy Quad and should continue to steadily improve.
Juniors Justin Frick and Ian Fox will guide the Tigers in the high jump and both are nationally ranked in the event in the preseason rankings. No. 5-ranked Frick has provisionally qualified with a jump of 2.15 meters, while No. 21-ranked Fox's best was 2.04 meters at the last meet.
Freshman Austin Hollimon and sophomore Mike Eddy should have equally great success in the 400, and freshmen Donn Cabral, Brian Leung and Max Kaulbach have all been successful in their first times out in the 3000 and should have another stellar weekend.
In the distance medley relay, senior Michael Maag will take the 1200 meter leadoff leg. Maag is ranked No. 13 in the preseason rankings in the mile and No. 10 in the 3000.
