Women's Hockey Stunned In Overtime Defeat
January 31, 2009 | Women's Ice Hockey
They say the only number that matters is the one on the scoreboard, and Saturday's women's hockey game at Baker Rink was a perfect example. Despite outshooting Brown 43-12 and winning twice as many faceoffs, the Princeton Tigers ended their home weekend shocked by a 2-1 overtime defeat.
Brown's Jenna Dancewicz scored twice, including the game winner with 54 seconds remaining in overtime, to lead Brown to its fifth win of the season and fourth in the ECAC. Princeton, which was looking for a home sweep following Friday's 3-2 win over Yale, fell to 13-9-1 overall and 10-6-0 in the ECAC.
As it did in every period of the contest, Princeton outshot Brown 4-2 in the overtime session. The Tigers fired the first four shots of the extra period, but Brown goaltender Nicole Stock built on her brilliant effort with four of her 42 saves. With just over one minute remaining, Brown was finally able to bring the puck down the ice, and Nicole Brown took it from the left boards in deep and took a shot that Princeton senior Kristen Young saved. Sasha Van Muyen was first to the rebound and got the puck back to the goal area. With both teams mired in a scrum directly in front of Young, Dancewicz somehow got her stick on it and shot it into the left side of the net.
It was Dancewicz who started the scoring as well. On a five-on-three power play, the Brown sophomore found herself alone in the right circle and beat Young for her fourth goal of the season. Brown would have five power plays during the game, and that would prove to be its only shot on goal in any of them; on the flip side, Princeton took 16 shots on goal in its five power plays, but Stock had an answer for each of them.
She never had a chance on the one that Princeton scored. Midway through the third period, Princeton upped the attack deep in the Brown end. Paula Romanchuk found Melanie Wallace near the left circle, and Wallace fired a shot that Stock deflected away. As the Brown defense went to Wallace, the puck cleared to the right side, where only Princeton senior Katherine Dineen was skating. She calmly fired the puck into the top of the goal for her fifth of the season and third of the weekend.
Unfortunately, Princeton wasn't able to follow up, despite several later chances. Young ended the game with 10 saves, while Princeton recorded a 44-22 edge in faceoffs.
The Tigers, who are in quite a battle for home ice in the ECAC quarterfinal round, will play their final home weekend of the regular season Feb. 6 and 7; play will begin Friday night at 7 p.m. against Cornell. Admission at Baker Rink is free for both games, including Senior Day against Colgate.
