Micir Puts in a Career Effort in Hard-Fought Battle with Harvard
January 31, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/31/09) ? Princeton sophomore Addie Micir had a career-night, scoring 24 points, but it wasn't enough the Tigers fell to Harvard, 82-73, on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Jadwin Gym.
Micir scored 15 of her 24 points from behind the arc, shooting 5-for-11 from long range. She also added six rebounds and three assists.
The Tigers came back from an 19-point deficit and was brought the game within three in the final minute of the game.
“We knew it would be our defense versus Harvard's offense that would be the key to the game,” Coach Bangart said. “We didn't play the defense we've been defining ourselves by, which put us in an 18-point hole. It was hard to come back from but we did it, and a lot of that was because of Addie. She is so versatile and important to our team. She'll do anything we need her to do. If we need her to shoot, she shoots. If we need her to pass she passes. I'm pleased for Addie but she isn't because we didn't get that win.”
“What's frustrating is that five or six possessions, could have made us 2-0 this weekend instead of 0-2,” Banghart said.”
The teams started the game trading buckets and the lead exchanged hands four times in the first six minutes, with Harvard holding a slim 10-8 lead at 14:09.
The Crimson took an eight-point lead thanks to three three-pointers in the next two minutes to grab a 21-13 edge.
The squad maintained its eight-point lead five minutes later, 30-22 with 7:13 remaining in the half. Princeton's three-point basket by senior Whitney Downs would be its last field goal for the next four minutes as Harvard held the team without a basket and went on an 11-0 run to go up 41-22 with just under four minutes to play.
Sophomore Krystal Hill ended the scoring drought at 3:47 dropping in a ball from long range, which sparker a 16-4 Tiger run that brought Princeton within seven at the half, 45-37.
The teams traded runs almost the entire second half. Princeton would get within five points on five different occasions and with three minutes to play Harvard had a 73-68 lead.
Freshman Lauren Edwards hit the end of a one-an-one to give Princeton's its smallest deficit since the opening minutes, 73-69. Harvard's Emma Markley hit a jumper to put Harvard up by six and after a missed field goal, Edwards stole the ball away from Brogan Berry and brought it down the court for the easy lay-up to make it 75-71 with 59 seconds remaining.
Princeton fouled Berry, who went 1-for-2, and Jessica Berry powered through the lane for a lay-up to make it a one-possession game, 76-73 with 46 seconds to play. The Tigers again fouled Berry who made both of her shots. A Princeton turnover led the team to purposefully foul Harvard again, and Emily Tay hit both her shots to put the Crimson up by seven, 80-73 with 14 seconds left.
The Tigers missed on both of its final shots of the game and fouled Markley, who nailed both her chances to make it 82-73. Downs tried for a three with two seconds left but it wouldn't drop.
Downs finished the night with 18 points and six rebounds, while freshman Devona Allgood chipped in 15 points and a team-high eight boards. Edwards added seven points and seven rebounds, while Berry contributed four assists. As a team Princeton shot 43.9 from the field, 40.9 percent from the three-point line and 42.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Markley led the Crimson with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Tay added 14 points and had a team-high nine assists. Christine Matera also scored 14 points, and Katie Rollins contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. As a team, Harvard shot 53.1 percent and was 46.7 percent from long range, thanks for 4-for-6 shooting from Matera. The Crimson shot 53.8 percent from the charity stripe to 10-7 on the season and 2-1 in the league.
