PRINCETON (10/16/09) - The fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team resumes its Ivy League schedule this Saturday at Brown. Princeton's sits atop the Ivy League standings at 3-0 with the only undefeated record in the league.
Princeton last played an Ivy League game two weeks ago when it blanked Columbia 4-0 at Class of '52 Stadium. Princeton has taken on three non-league opponents since the Columbia game, topping fifth-ranked Connecticut, pushing top-ranked Maryland to overtime and edging American by a goal last Sunday.
Each of Princeton's last two games was one-goal decision with the Maryland game ending in the Terps' favor and the American game going the Tigers way. In the win on Sunday at American, Princeton outshot the Eagles 15-4 and had six corners to American's two, but the Tigers found themselves trailing twice before coming from behind to win in the final 11 minutes.
Freshman Julia Reinprecht scored her seventh goal of the season in the first half to knot the score at 1-1, and after American took a 2-1 lead early in the second half, Princeton drew even on senior Christina Bortz's fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute. Princeton continued to pressure after evening the game and sophomore Kathleen Sharkey provided the game winner in the final minute of regulation.
Sharkey had a goal and an assist and she continues to lead the team in scoring, now with 13 goals, eight assists and 34 points. She has scored goals in six-straight games for the Tigers and in nine of the team's 12 games. Classmate Katie Reinprecht ranks second in scoring with seven goals and seven assists. Included in the total was her assist on Sharkey's game winner at American. Julia Reinprecht also has seven goals this season and ranks third on the team with 17 points.
Princeton moved into fourth in this week's NFHCA Coaches Poll, breaking last week's fourth-place tie with Wake Forest and inching ahead of the Demon Deacons. Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia remained the top three teams in the poll and Wake Forest rounds out the top five.
All eight Ivy League teams resume their league schedules this weekend with three games on Saturday and one on Sunday. Princeton remains atop the standings as the lone 3-0 team. There are three teams-Cornell, Dartmouth and Yale-currently a game back at 2-1 in Ivy play. Dartmouth and Yale meet on Saturday. Princeton's opponent this weekend, Brown is 0-3 in league play.
Princeton and Brown meet for the 33rd time on Saturday with Princeton holding a series edge of 23-8-1 overall and 8-7-1 in games at Brown. Princeton has won nine-straight games in the series and held Brown to a goal or less in each game of the streak. Last year Princeton topped the Bears 7-1 at home last season as Katie Reinprecht scored two goals and Sharkey added a single tally and an assist.
The Bears are 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the Ivy League. Brown has dropped four of its last five games since opening the season 3-3. Brown has losses to Dartmouth, Fairfield, Harvard and Maine in that span. The Tigers and Bears have played two common opponents with Princeton beating both Columbia and Dartmouth and Brown losing to both.
