Four Players Reach Double Figures in 77-45 Win Over American

PRINCETON, N.J. (11/16/09) - Four players were in double figures to give the Princeton women's basketball team a 77-45 win over American in the Tigers' home opener on Monday, Nov. 16 at Jadwin Gym.
"I haven't seen a defensive effort like that, and I've been around the game a long time," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "We talked after Friday's win that we need to be more disciplined defensively and that's exactly what we were."
Junior Addie Micir recorded a game-high 20 points and shot 6-for-11 from long range. The Ivy League Rookie of the Week, Niveen Rasheed, continued her hot streak, with her second 18-point game. She added five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Junior Krystal Hill chipped in 11 points, and sophomore Devona Allgood had 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
It took the Tigers a few minutes to find their groove on the Jadwin Gym hardwoods, going 0-for-8 in the first three minutes. During that time American took a 6-0 lead on two three-pointers. Rasheed got the ball to drop at 16:55 to send Princeton on an 18-0 run, grabbing an 18-6 lead midway through the half. During that span Micir and Rasheed both dropped in six points apiece. The teams traded baskets before Princeton grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 3:26 off a three-pointer by Micir, to make it 30-11. American's Liz Leer tried to get her team back into the game with two baskets, but Princeton ended the first half with a 17-point lead, 34-17.
Both teams added five points to its teams' totals to start the second half, before Princeton went on its second big run of the game. The Tigers nailed the next 24 straight points to go up 55-24 with 14 minutes to play. Nicole Ryan ended American's drought with a three-pointer and a jumper to make it a 55-29 game at 12:20. The Eagles' 26-point deficit would be the closest they would get, as the Tigers pulled away and took a 34-point lead on two occasions. Hill added a three and two free throws, and senior Tani Brown capped off the win with a bucket in the final seconds.
As a team Princeton shot 50.8 percent from the floor (31-61) and scored 10 of 19 three-point chances for a 52.6 percentage. The Tigers also went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
American was paced by Ryan's 16-point night. Michelle Kirk had eight points and team-high six boards and three assists. Raven Harris led the team in assists and steals, with four and two, respectively. The Eagles shot 40 percent (18-45) from the floor, was 7-for-12 from three-point range, and 2-for-6 from the free-throw line.
The Tigers are 2-0 on the season, and host Delaware on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.
