Wrestling Places Six At Keystone Classic; Frey Reaches Finals Again
November 23, 2009 | Wrestling
Freshman Garrett Frey continued the torrid start to his Princeton wrestling career by reaching a second championship final in as many weeks. Frey's runner-up finish at the Keystone Classic was the highlight of the weekend for Princeton, which placed five wrestlers overall in the Sunday tournament.
Princeton placed eighth overall in the tournament, held at The Palestra, but got several individual wins throughout the lineup. As was the case at The Binghamton Open, the standout came at 125 pounds. Frey, whose performance the previous weekend earned him the No. 2 seed, picked up two major decisions before earning a tight 11-9 win over Brown's Greg Einfrank in the semifinal; it was Frey's second win in as many weeks against Einfrank, the EIWA's fourth-ranked 125-pounder in the preseason.
The man who held a stop above Einfrank in the preseason rankings was American's Jasen Borshoff, and he was the one who finally handed Frey his first collegiate loss. It would be a tough final, but Borshoff came away with a 5-3 win.
Senior tri-captain Danny Scotton earned a fifth-place finish at 157 pounds, and he did it the hard way. After losing his first-round match to the eventual finalist, Scotton moved immediately into the consolation round. He won a major decision and followed with a 3-1 overtime win over VMI's Matthew Brock. A two-point loss to the No. 2 seed moved Scotton to the fifth-place match, which he won 9-7.
Sophomore Andy Lowy made the same journey one weight class higher. After falling to the No. 2 seed to open the championship bracket, Lowy won two straight major decisions before being forced to the fifth-place match. Lowy took it 6-5 for another fifth-place finish.
The top Princeton freshman of the 2008-09 season was Kurt Brendel, and he became Princeton's second semifinalist of the day. After a 14-2 win in the first round, Brendel took on the second-seeded John Hall of Boston University and pulled out a wild 11-10 victory. Another win over a top-five opponent in the consolation bracket put Brendel in the third-place match, but Appalachian State's Dylan Temple, the third seed, pulled out a 9-6 win.
Freshman Charles Fox won three matches at 197 pounds, including one in the championship bracket, to earn a sixth-place finish at the weight class.
