Seven Football Players Earn All-Ivy Distinction
November 24, 2009 | Football
Seven Princeton football players, including a pair of veteran offensive linemen, ended their 2009 seasons with All-Ivy League honors. Four players earned second-team honors, including junior linebacker Steven Cody, who led the league and ranked fifth in the nation in tackles.
Cody joined seniors Andrew Hauser, Dan Kopolovich and Mark Paski with second-team All-Ivy distinction, while juniors Trey Peacock and Matt Boyer and senior Joel Karacozoff earned All-Ivy honorable mention.
Cody led Princeton in tackles for the second straight season with 104 stops and averaged an Ivy League best 11.6 tackles per game. Cody recorded 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, seven passes defensed and two interceptions, including one he returned for a 77-yard touchdown in Princeton's 17-14 victory at Lehigh. His 10-tackle, two-sack effort in the 23-11 win at Dartmouth earned him Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Kopolovich was the No. 2 tackler at Princeton with 74 stops, including 42 solo ones. An unselfish and versatile player, Kopolovich played more snaps in 2009 than any of his teammates and led the team with 11 passes defensed. He recorded 10 break-ups, including ones on potential game-tying or game-winning drives in Princeton victories over both Lehigh and Yale, and he added his first interception of the season in the win over the Bulldogs.
Senior offensive linemen Mark Paski and Andrew Hauser were fittingly put together on the second team. They have played together in 34 of their 40 games at Princeton; Hauser earned a starting role midway through his freshman season, while Paski became the first Princeton offensive lineman to start every game of his Tiger career. They were starters during Princeton's 2006 Ivy League championship season.
Leading the All-Ivy honorable mention trio is Karacozoff, who led all defensive linemen with 43 tackles. An impact player since his sophomore season, Karacozoff recorded 43 tackles, three for loss, 2.5 sacks and five passes defensed. Karacozoff's final series at home provided one of his biggest plays, as it was his sack of Patrick Witt that basically ended Princeton's 24-17 win over Yale.
Boyer came on strong during the second half of the season and recorded 40 tackles, including five for loss. He also recorded five pass break-ups and had arguably his best effort in the season-ending 23-11 win at Dartmouth, when he spent much of the game in the Big Green backfield.
Peacock led Princeton with 48 receptions and averaged 52.7 yards per game. He recorded three touchdowns, including two in the 17-14 win over Cornell. His 78-yard touchdown catch against the Big Red was the Tigers' longest play of the season and provided the late winning margin against the Big Red.
