PRINCETON (11/5/09) - The Princeton women's hockey team travels to Yale and Brown for a pair of ECAC and Ivy League games this weekend. Princeton opened the league season last weekend with a win and a tie at home.
Princeton skated to a 2-2 tie with Rensselaer last Friday night to open the league campaign and got its first league win the following afternoon with a 6-3 triumph over Union. Princeton led for all but 3:15 over the weekend in taking three of four league points.
On Friday against RPI, freshman Kelly Cooke opened the scoring in the early going. After RPI drew even, senior defenseman Maddie Endicott gave Princeton a 2-1 lead on the power play, but the Engineers quickly countered with a power-play goal of their own to even the game at 2-2. That was it for the offense in the game as the teams' defense and goaltending took over from there to stymie both offenses. Freshman Cassie Seguin made 19 saves in the tie.
A day later, Union jumped ahead of the Tigers 16 seconds into the game, but the Tigers answered in the fourth minute on a goal from junior defenseman Laura Martindale and never trailed again in the win. Sophomore Paula Romanchuk scored two goals nine seconds apart early in the second period and after Union tied the game, sophomore Danielle DiCesare provided the game winner. Sophomore Rachel Weber made 10 saves for the win.
Romanchuk had two goals and two assists in the Union win for four points, becoming the second Tiger this season to record a four-point game. DiCesare added two assists in addition to her goal and now currently leads the team with eight points, four goals and four assists, in four games played. Cooke and Romanchuk each have six points.
With its win and a tie, the Tigers currently sit fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings. Clarkson is first with a 3-0 record and Cornell, Quinnipiac and St. Lawrence are all tied for second with two wins, just a point ahead of Princeton in fifth. Princeton opponents this weekend, Yale and Brown, were each swept last weekend at Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night at Yale. The Tigers lead the all-time series with Yale 50-10-2 and are 24-2-2 all-time in New Haven. Princeton has won three-straight games in the series, including wins of 3-2 and 4-1 last season. In late January, the Tigers won 3-2 at home as then-senior Katherine Dineen scored twice and senior Melanie Wallace and sophomore Julie Johnson each had two assists. The Tigers then closed the regular season with a 4-1 win at Yale with all the goals coming in the final period. Then-senior Christina Foster had two goals and Wallace added Princeton's third goal.
Yale is 0-2-1 overall this season and 0-2 in the ECAC. Yale opened the season with a 2-2 tie at Providence. Last weekend Yale was swept at St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The Bulldogs were shut out in both games, falling 4-0 at St. Lawrence and 2-0 at Clarkson. Junior Bray Ketcum, Yale's leading returning scorer with 45 career points, is the only Bulldog with multiple points this season.
On Saturday Princeton travels to Providence to take on Brown. Princeton is 31-28-2 all-time against Brown and is 16-14-2 in games played in Providence. Princeton is 4-1-1 in its last six against Brown, but the teams split two games last season with each winning on the road. Brown won a 2-1 overtime game at Princeton despite being outshot 43-12. Princeton blanked Brown 3-0 late in the season as sophomore Heather Landry and junior Sasha Sherry provided goals in the win.
The Tigers complete the weekend at 1-3 Brown. The Bears are also 0-2 in the ECAC after being swept at Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Brown opened the season with a loss to Connecticut, then defeated Providence prior to last weekend's sweep. The Bears fell 1-0 at Clarkson and 3-1 at St. Lawrence. Senior Sasha Van Muyen's two goals lead the Bears this season.
