Donohue Powers Princeton To 3-1 Win At Columbia
November 08, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
A brilliant 22-kill, 24-dig effort by senior Sheena Donohue led the Princeton women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Columbia Saturday afternoon in New York City.
Donohue was one of three Princeton players with double-digit kills against the Lions. Freshman Lydia Rudnick recorded 16 kills and 12 digs, while senior Taylor Carroll recorded 12 kills and five blocks. Sophomore Cathryn Quinn had six kills without an error, while freshman Molly Bagshaw recorded 45 assists for the Tigers. Sophomore Hillary Ford guided the defense with 16 digs.
Princeton showed resilience in bouncing back after a tough opening set loss. The first set was close throughout, although Columbia was able to maintain an edge for most of the way and side out enough to clinch a 25-23 win. The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the second, but a 3-0 run on Bagshaw's serve gave Princeton the advantage. A close lead grew to 20-14 when Donohue ran off three straight points on her serve, and a combo block from freshmen Bagshaw and Jennifer Palmquist gave Princeton the set.
The Tigers took six of the first seven points in the third set to take control in an eventual 25-19 win, and they hit .389 in the fourth set for a 25-15 victory.
Princeton is now 9-13 overall, 7-4 in the Ivy League, after starting 2-12 overall, 0-2 in the Ivy League. The Tigers are battling Harvard for third place in the Ivy League and will see both the Crimson and Dartmouth next weekend in the final home matches of the 2009 season. Princeton opens the weekend at 7 p.m. Friday against Dartmouth before facing Harvard Saturday at 4 p.m. for a Senior Day showdown.
