November 08, 2009 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA (11/7/09) - Three different players scored as the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Penn, 3-1, on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Rhodes Field.
The win was not only special because it pushed the Tigers' unbeaten streak to six games but also because it was head coach Jim Barlow's 100th career victory.
Princeton took a 2-0 lead 38 minutes into the game as the Tigers quickly took control offensively. Six minutes in junior Josh Walburn had Princeton's first solid chance at the net when his shot went just above the cross bar. Four minutes later an Antoine Hoppenot from Matt Sanner goal was called off because of an offsides call. Senior Ben Harms followed up with a shot that was saved by a defender on the line in the 14th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Lynch got his first test in the 20th minute when Penn's Tobi Olopade launched a ball from 35 yards out that Lynch tipped up and over the cross bar.
Three minutes later, Hoppenot got the Tigers on the scoreboard. Walburn had a long shot hit off the far post, and Hoppenot was right in front of the goal to get the rebound and put it away in the 23rd minute.
Harms made it 2-0 Princeton in the 39th minute when he beat two defenders and put a 25-yard shot into the right corner with Hoppenot picking up an assist.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Penn cut the deficit to 2-1, when Jason Gorski connected with Christian Barreiro. Barreiro took a corner kick on the left side that bent in on goal and Gorski gave it an extra push into the net at 53:28.
The goal gave the Quakers some confidence and didn't allow the Tigers many trips down the into their attacking third the rest of the game. Travis Cantrell had a shot off a free kick but Lynch was there to pull the ball down for a goal kick. Loukas Tasigianis tried to get another Penn goal with 13 minutes to play but again Lynch was there to make the stop.
Sanner added Princeton's third goal of the game at 62:29 when he chipped goalkeeper Garon Smith with a shot from the near flank about 18 yards out. Walburn earned an assist, his second of the night.
Princeton had a couple of excellent chances in the waning minutes with both shots being saved by Smith. Off a Princeton throw in about 25 yards out, junior Tim Sedwitz rolled the ball off his back and in on net, but Smith was right behind him to make the save. Harms 'megged his defender deep in the near left corner and ripped a shot on goal that Smith had to leap out to stop.
Both teams had 14 shots with Princeton taking a 9-5 edge in the first and Penn earning the same in the second.
Lynch and Smith both finished the night with five saves apiece, and Penn also had a team save on the Harms shot early in the game.
Princeton improves to 8-5-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the Ivy League to take sole possession of fourth place, while Penn falls to 6-7-3 and 2-3-1 in the conference for fifth place.
The Tigers host Yale in the final regular season game of the year on Friday, Nov. 13 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The game will be televised live nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel. Kick off is set for 8 p.m.
