Women's Basketball Slays the Dragons, 66-49

PHILADELPHIA (12/17/09) - Freshman Niveen Rasheed scored a career-high 27 points while sophomore Devona Allgood recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Princeton women's basketball team defeated Drexel 66-49 on Thursday, Dec. 17 at Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Rasheed shot 11 for 16 from the floor and added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block. Sophomore Lauren Edwards was also in double digits with 12 points and contributed seven boards. Juniors Addie Micir and Krystal Hill added seven and six points, respectively.
"We keep telling our kids every night that we are 0-0 and we just have to find a way and that's exactly what they did tonight," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "We didn't shoot well from three, but we were able to generate offense anyway. I just love how this team competes. And we're going to keep trying to get better."
Princeton jumped out to a 10-3 lead, shooting 4 for 5 and holding Drexel to 1 for 5 from the field, giving up just a three ball.
The Tigers saw their lead slip to one at 13:39 as Drexel came back from the first media timeout with an 8-2 run. After a Princeton free throw, Drexel's leading scorer Gabriela Marginean evened the game on the Dragons' next possession, 13-13.
The Tigers clawed their way back and regained a seven-point lead, 21-14, at 8:18 on an 8-1 run getting a basket from four different players.
Drexel responded with a 10-5 run over a span of six minutes to get within two, 26-24 with less than two minutes to play.
Princeton closed out the first half getting five points from Edwards to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.
Drexel opened the second half on a 9-3 run to take its first lead of the game at 15:55, 35-34.
The teams would exchange leads eight times in the next seven minutes with Drexel not getting any further than a one-point lead on the Tigers. During that time Drexel's Marginean picked up her fourth foul and took a seat on the bench.
Princeton would take the lead at 8:35 on the second of two free throws by Rasheed and would go on a 10-0 run to grab a double-digit lead, 56-45 with 2:54 to play.
The Tigers held the Dragons scoreless from the field for more than eight minutes, forcing Marginean to re enter the game for Drexel at 4:25 where she would play just 2:22 before fouling out.
Princeton expanded its lead with a 10-2 run in the last two minutes of the game to earn the 66-49 victory.
Kamile Nacickaite led the Dragons with 19 points and Marginean finished the game with 10 points, a team-best eight rebounds and three steals. Marisa Crane added eight points and had a team-high four assists. Drexel shot 38.5 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from the line.
Princeton outrebounded Drexel 39-26 and shot 50 percent from the field (13-27) and 70.6 percent from the line.
The projected 2010 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Drexel falls to 4-4 overall. Princeton improves to 8-2 overall and will take on Houston on Sunday, Dec. 20 in Texas.
