Two Double-Doubles Give Women's Basketball 71-60 Win Over Houston
December 20, 2009 | Women's Basketball
HOUSTON (12/20/09) - Freshman Niveen Rasheed and sophomore Devona Allgood each recorded a double-double as the Princeton women's basketball team defeated Houston, 71-60 on Sunday, Dec. 20 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Rasheed scored a game-high 24 points and had a personal-best 14 rebounds, while adding three assists, two steals and one block. Allgood scored a career-high 21 points as she brought down 11 rebounds. She had a near perfect game on 9 for 10 shooting, and was 3 for 3 from the line while matching her career-best with five blocks.
"This team continues to show such enormous fight and what's really promising is that we don't win the same way every time," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "Tonight our post players were huge for us. What can you say about Devona? 9 for 10 from the field, five blocks and 35 minutes from a big. Our inside players are really learning how to play together and you saw that tonight."
This was the first game this season for the Tigers that started with back and forth action, with three lead changes and three ties in the opening five minutes. The team responded well, coming out of the first timeout to score six of the next eight points to take a 15-8 lead at 13:36.Princeton grabbed its largest lead of the half, eight points, 19-11 at 11:01 with a jumper by Rasheed. A 7-0 solo run by Houston's leading scorer Brittney Scott made it a one-point game with 7:05 remaining in the half.
The Tigers used the remaining time to rebuild their lead, going on a 14-8 run, to close out the first half with a seven-point edge, 33-26. During that 5:28 span, Allgood contributed eight of the team's points to end the half on perfect 5 for 5 shooting.
A layup by sophomore Lauren Edwards gave the Tigers a nine-point lead, 35-26, to start the second half but the Cougars hit two straight 3-pointers to cut the lead to three. The teams continued to trade baskets with Houston coming within two on two occasions but Princeton maintained its lead and battled back to increase it.
The Tigers grabbed a double-digit lead, 54-44 at 9:16 with Rasheed and Allgood combining to score all Princeton's 11 points.
Edwards scored four straight free throws to go up by 12, 58-46, at 8:13. Three minutes later Princeton had its largest lead of the game, a 14-point margin. The Tigers were up by 14 with 4:39 to play, when the Cougars went on an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to just six, 66-60, with 1:13 remaining.
Rasheed ended Princeton's scoring drought with a free throw at 1:08. Junior Addie Micir and freshman Kate Miller would close out the scoring, as both went 2-for-2 from the line to give Princeton a final score of 71-60.
Edwards added 14 points and had four assists and two blocks. Micir chipped in eight points and five rebounds. The Tigers shot 41.3 percent form the floor, 72.7 percent from the charity stripe and 21.4 percent from long range.
Scott paced the Cougars with 23 points on 8 for 20 shooting. Porsche Landry added 10 points and five assists, while Lesslee Mason had nine and a game-high 14 boards. The team shot 33.3 percent overall, 31.8 percent from behind the arc and 42.9 percent from the free-throw line, making just nine of its 21 chances.
Houston falls to 6-4 overall and lost for just the third time in 15 games at Hofheinz.
Today's victory marks the program's second win over a Conference USA team, and the first since 2005 when Princeton defeated Central Florida.
"People back home asked 'how are you going to get the team excited when it's been such a long grind since September?' Banghart said. "Houston is coming off of 12 days off, but with this team, they just find a way to win and they play really hard. No matter if it's December 20 or the first game of the year. I'm pleased for them to win on a Conference USA court thousands of miles away from home, just by being the tougher team."
The Tigers enter the holiday break with a 9-2 overall record. Princeton returns to the hardwoods on Wednesday, Dec. 30 when it travels up state to take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
