Rasheed Records Double-Double in Princeton's 83-57 Win Over Rider
December 09, 2009 | Women's Basketball
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (12/8/09) - Freshman Niveen Rasheed had her second career double-double to lead the Princeton women's basketball team to an 83-57 win over Rider on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Alumni Gym. Rasheed matched her career-high 21 points, added 10 rebounds, six assists, five steals, did not have a single turnover and did it all in just 23 minutes.
"She competes," head coach Courrtney Banghart said in referring to Rasheed. "She obviously loves the game and what you are seeing is a true competitor, and a kid like that will always have a special place in any program."
Junior Addie Micir had a game-high 22 points on 8 for 11 shooting and added six rebounds. Sophomore Devona Allgood added 10 points, eight rebounds and team-high six steals. Classmates Lauren Edwards and Laura Johnson contributed nine points apiece.
Rider started the game on a 21-9 run to take a 12-point lead. The Tigers had yet to start a game with a 12-point deficit and tried different substitution combinations to try to get something going. A media timeout at 11:25 was what the squad needed to settle down and regroup.
The Tigers started to chip away at the Broncs' lead and slowly built the lead in their favor. A pair of free throws by Allgood sparked a 19-6 run that allowed the squad to take the lead. Rasheed gave the Tigers the lead, 28-27, on a pair of free throws at 5:40. Princeton continued to hit its shots and went on a 14-5 run to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room.
Micir and Rasheed both finished the first half with 10 points apiece, with Micir sinking a three pointer in the last minute to give the Tigers the 20-point advantage.
Princeton came out in the second and continued its hot streak on an 18-4 run to take its largest lead of the game a 26-point edge, 62-36, at 14:52. During that time, Rasheed added nine more points to her stat line.
Rider then took a 15-7 run to come within 18, 69-51, at 7:19. It would be as close as the Broncs would get as the Tigers added the next 14 of 20 points to regain their original 26-point lead, 83-57, at 1:07 and the score would stand.
"That was the first time where we didn't start with a pretty big lead," Banghart said. "I told them in the locker room that I was proud of them for battling back and it showed maturity that we can play from behind. I was pleased with a pretty balanced attack by our first five."
Amanda Sepulveda and Cintella Spotwood each had 14 points for Rider, while leading scorer Tammy Meyers added 13. Cailtin Bopp was the team leader under the glass with a game-high 15 rebounds. The Broncs shot 41.2 percent from the field, was 50 percent from the free-throw line and 42.9 percent from behind the arc.
Princeton shot 46.5 percent for the game, was 68.8 from the line and 42.9 from downtown. The Tigers scored 32 points off of turnovers compared to nine for the Broncs, and had a 19-6 edge in fast-break points.
The Tigers improve to 6-2 overall and will host Lafayette on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
