The Princeton women's hockey team hits the road this weekend and visits Northern New York to take on Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Princeton currently sits tied for fourth in the ECAC standings and must finish in the top four to clinch a home ice playoff spot in the ECAC quarterfinals.
Princeton earned three of a four possible points last weekend with a win over Colgate and a tie with Cornell. The Tigers have earned 15 of their last 18 possible points since the calendar turned to 2009 and in turn have climbed into contention for a home-ice playoff series.
Princeton opened the weekend with a 3-1 win over Colgate last Friday, avenging a loss to Colgate earlier in the season. Princeton used two goals in the game's first 10 minutes to build a lead that Colgate could not overcome. Freshman Paula Romanchuk started the scoring with her team-leading ninth goal of the season and senior Christine Foster netted the eventual game winner midway through the period. Colgate moved within a goal late in the first, but could get no closer as freshman Heather Landry capped the scoring in the third. Landry had a goal and as assist in the game and sophomore Sasha Sherry had two assists.
The Tigers earned a point the following afternoon following a 2-2 tie with Cornell. The Big Red jumped to leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, but Princeton answered back each time to draw even. Freshman Charissa Stadnyk scored the first goal and senior Annie Greenwood provided the game winner.
Princeton enters the weekend tied for fourth in the ECAC standings with Colgate. The pair lay three points behind third-place Harvard and five behind second-place Dartmouth. Additionally they have a two-point edge on sixth-place Clarkson. This weekend Princeton visits Clarkson and St. Lawrence, while Colgate hosts Harvard and Dartmouth.
Princeton starts the weekend on Friday at Clarkson against the team right behind it in the ECAC standings. Princeton is 10-3-1 all-time against the Golden Knights and is 6-2 in the series in games played in Potsdam. Despite the Tiger edge in the series, Clarkson has won the last three meetings in the series, winning two games last year in the ECAC playoffs and taking a 3-2 overtime win in Princeton in November. In the game, Princeton led 2-1 in the third before Clarkson tied the game on the power play and then won it in overtime.
Clarkson is 15-10-5 overall and 9-6-3 in the ECAC. The Golden Knights are 3-2-1 in their last six games, splitting last weekend series with a win over Union and a loss to RPI. Clarkson defeated St. Lawrence last Wednesday.
Princeton completes the weekend Saturday at St. Lawrence. The Tigers hold a 23-16-3 series edge and are 13-7-1 in the series in Canton. The Tigers picked up a 4-2 win when the teams played in November in Princeton. Sherry scored two goals, including the game winner, while junior Melanie Wallace and senior Katherine Dineen each had two assists. Princeton has just three wins in its last 18 games against St. Lawrence.
St. Lawrence is 20-7-3 overall and 14-3-1 in the ECAC to sit atop the standings. The Saints are 8-2 in their last 10 games and swept Rensselaer and Union last weekend to snap a two-game losing skid. The Saints are 13-1-1 at home this year.
