Yale Sneaks By Princeton 56-54 in Women's Basketball
February 13, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (2/13/09) ? The Yale women's basketball team made some key plays in the closing minutes and Princeton's turnover trouble led to the Bulldogs pulling away with a 56-54 win on Friday, Feb. 13 at Jadwin Gym.
Sophomore Krystal Hill pushed past her defenders and made her way to the basket to put Princeton up 44-38 at 10:22 in the second half. It would be the Tigers' last basket for five minutes, which opened the door for Yale to take its first lead of the game and hang on for the win.
The Bulldogs were up by three, 47-44, when senior Julia Berger ended Princeton's scoring drought with a free throw at 5:46. Sophomore Addie Micir drained two three-point baskets while Yale added four points to settle the score at 51-51 with 4:09 remaining.
The teams traded layups and a free throw by freshman Devona Allgood put Princeton up by one, 54-43 with 2:10 to play. Yale's Melissa Colborne hit both of her free throws at 1:25 to give her team a one-point lead. Princeton would turn the ball over four times in that final 1:25 and had a scoring opportunity to win the game when a three-pointer wouldn't fall with 17 seconds to play leading to a defensive rebound. A Princeton foul put Kaitlyn Lillemoe at the line but she missed both her chances, giving the Tigers a shot to take the game, but the possession resulted in a turnover. An ensuing foul added one more point onto the score for Yale with five seconds to play. Although Allgood grabbed the rebound on the second missed free throw, Princeton turned the ball over at the top of the key as the buzzer sounded.
“In a possession game that can go either way it comes down to making good decisions and we didn't make a good decision in the end,” Coach Banghart said. “Our defense has been good for us all year. It has been out strength and we're relied on it a lot. Once we got to 13-2 were weren't able to get good locks and play a good pace offensively. We started to get careless and weren't valuing possession as much as we had to value it.”
Princeton started the game taking an 11-point lead, 13-2 in the first eight minutes. The defense kept the Bulldogs from making 12 of their 13 shots during that time. Yoyo Greenfield drained a three-pointer and Michelle Cashen dropped in two baskets to make it a four-point game, 13-9 just two minutes later. Jamie Van Horne knocked down a three pointer to make it a one-point game, 13-12, at 9:03. Princeton worked its way back up to a seven-point lead to end the first half, 31-24.
The Tigers regained their 11-point advantage 52 seconds into the second half before the Bulldogs went on an 8-5 run to make it 40-32 at 15:46. Yale kept Princeton off the scoreboard for the next four minutes and rattled off six points to make it 40-38. Hill would score one more point before her basket at 10:22.
Micir led Princeton in scoring with 16 points, while adding four rebounds. Allgood posted her second career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Whitney Downs chipped in nine points while freshman Lauren Edwards added nine rebounds. As a team, the Tigers shot 38.9 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from the free-throw line and 23.5 percent from behind the arc. The team had a 39-37 edge in rebounds.
Yale was led by Colborne, who scored a game-high 17 points while also adding eight rebounds. Greenfield contributed 12 points, and Van Horne and Cashen had eight points apiece. Mady Gobrecht led the team on the glass with 11 rebounds. The team shot 37.5 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from the charity stripe and 62.5 percent from long range.
Princeton is now 8-12 on the season and 3-3 in the Ivy League, while Yale improves to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Princeton hosts Brown tomorrow, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. The Bears fell 66-49 to Penn earlier this evening.
Tonight's game was part of the WBCA's Pink Zone to raise breast cancer awareness. The Tigers donned full pink uniforms and the crowd over 900 was a sea of pink as well. Check out the Princeton Athletics Web site for a photo gallery in the next few days.
