Women's Water Polo Hosts Princeton Invitational
February 20, 2009 | Women's Water Polo
The Princeton women's water polo team hosts the nine-team Princeton Invitational this weekend at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton will play four games over the weekend, hosting Marist, Harvard, Brown and Wagner.
The Tigers are 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the CWPA Southern Division as the season hits its third weekend. Princeton started the year with three straight wins, claiming non-league wins over Villanova and Mercyhurst, before splitting a league weekend on the road. Princeton topped George Washington 12-4, before dropping an 11-9 decision to a very good Maryland squad the last time it played.
Sophomore Lauren Brunner, the reigning Southern Rookie of the Year, led Princeton with five goals in its two games last weekend. She also leads the team with 10 goals scored this year. Junior Phoebe Champion also scored five goals last weekend and has seven this season. She is also a perfect 7-0 on sprints this season. Junior Helen Meigs and senior Claire Jacobson each have five goals on the season, with Meigs leading the way with seven assists.
Princeton will look to bounce back from the loss with four contests this weekend. The Tigers started the weekend against a talented Marist squad on Saturday morning. Princeton defeated Marist last season 10-8 in an early season game at the Maryland Invitational. The Tigers then face Ivy-foe Harvard in the final game of Saturday's schedule. Princeton also won its only game against the Crimson last season, a 14-10 win that came at the Princeton Invitational.
The Tigers complete the weekend with two games on Sunday. First Princeton faces another Ivy rival in Brown. The teams met once last season with Princeton winning 10-9 in overtime at the Elite Six Tournament. Finally, Princeton hosts Wagner on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers topped Wagner 11-6 last season in non-league play.
Princeton travels to Bucknell next weekend for three games at the Elite Six Tournament. Princeton will face Harvard again, as well as Michigan and Hartwick.
