Brendel, Everin Complete Regular Season With Home Sweep; Wrestling Drops Pair
February 21, 2009 | Wrestling
Freshman Kurt Brendel and senior Marty Everin built on their team-best win totals with a pair of victories Saturday, but the Princeton regular season ended with a pair of losses to Boston University and Sacred Heart in the home finale at Dillon Gym.
Princeton was hurt by the numbers game against Sacred Heart, which received 12 free points via forfeits at 133 and 141 pounds. Those 12 points would prove crucial in a 24-19 victory for Sacred Heart, while Boston University scored a convincing 37-7 victory.
Brendel and Everin were the only Tigers to pick up wins against the Terriers. Everin, who was honored during Senior Day and is the lone senior to start for Princeton, earned a 10-2 major decision over Carlo Ferrandino at 157 pounds. Brendel followed with a 6-2 victory over Carmen Rondash at 184 pounds.
The Sacred Heart match would prove much closer, thanks in part to a third-period pin by junior Robert Benitez, who got Mike Impellizeri on his back with only 49 seconds remaining. Those six points helped counter the free 12 ones for Sacred Heart, but Princeton would go back ahead following a 7-3 decision for Daniel Kolodzik at 149 and another major decision for Everin at 157.
The two teams would trade decisions, including a 9-4 victory for Travis Erdman at 174. Brendel picked up a 4-1 win over Brandon Lapp at 184 to give Princeton a 19-15 lead, but Sacred Heart finished strong with a pin at 197 and a decision at heavyweight to clinch the win.
Princeton is now finished with the regular season and will head to The Palestra in two weeks to compete in the 2009 EIWA Championships.
