Baseball Drops Season Opener to UNCG on Walk-Off Hit
February 28, 2009 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNC Greensboro's Pedro Leon spoiled the season opener for the Princeton baseball team when he delivered a walk-off double to lift the Spartans to a 6-5 win over the Tigers on Friday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Princeton and the Spartans traded the lead a few times as both teams built up their run totals over the first six innings. Both offense went silent late until the Spartans were able to win in walk-off fashion.
Princeton jumped to an early lead in the top of the first inning when junior Jack Murphy homered in his first at-bat of the season. With senior Derek Beckman on third, Murphy homered to left center to put the Tigers on the board early. That lead didn't last long though, as the Spartans countered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first.
Princeton went back ahead in the fifth innings when junior Greg Van Horn doubled home two runs with his hit down the left field line. It plated Beckman and senior Dan DeGeorge, who each reached bases on hits. UNCG quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer, but the Tigers evened the score in the sixth when junior Jon Broscious doubled in a run.
The game remained tied from there until the ninth. Princeton put two on in the top of the ninth, but the Spartans got out of the jam with an inning-ending double play, before winning it in the ninth.
Senior Brad Gemberling allowed three unearned runs in four innings. Sophomore Dan Barnes then came on and allowed two runs in three innings. Sophomore Matt Grabowski pitched the final 1.1 innings and took the loss.
Princeton continues the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
