March 07, 2009 | Baseball
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Greg Van Horn and Jack Murphy drove in runs with consecutive hits in the top of the 11th inning to lead the Princeton baseball team to an 8-6 win at William & Mary in the first game of a four-game series this weekend at Plumeri Park.
Van Horn and David Hale led the Tigers with three hits apiece, while Hale had a team-high three RBIs, all coming on a bases-loaded double in the fifth inning, which at the time gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead. Princeton's first run came in the second inning when senior Adrian Turnham walked and later scored on a fielder's choice.
After not being able to crack Princeton starting pitcher Dan Barnes over the first four innings, William & Mary managed to plate two runs off the sophomore in the bottom of the fifth when Lanny Stanfield plated two with a double. The Tribe chipped off another run on the sixth, but Princeton regained the three-run lead in its next at-bat when Van Horn hit a solo home run to left to lead off the seventh.
The Tribe responded by cutting the lead to one run with two in the eighth inning and then tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when Stanfield hit a solo homer with one out. The next batter doubled and made it to third on a groundout, but sophomore Matt Grabowski came on to pitch and got an inning-ending groundout to send the game to extra innings.
Both teams got a runner on base in their respective at-bats in the 10th inning, but neither team could push across a run until the Tigers scored two in the 11th. With one out, senior Derek Beckman walked to reach base for the third time in the game. He stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Van Horn single. Murphy followed with a double down the left field line to plate Van Horn.
The Tribe threatened in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Grabowski got Andy Longosz to strike out looking to seal the win for the Tigers.
Grabowski got the win for Princeton and improved to 1-1 this season. He has gotten both decisions for the Tigers this season as Princeton is also 1-1. He pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one hit while fanning two. Barnes struck out six and allowed two runs in five innings, while sophomore David Palms surrendered four runs in the middle 3.2 innings. Kevin Landry took the loss for William & Mary.
The teams continue their series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
