Career Efforts Give Women's Basketball a 61-53 Win Over Yale
March 01, 2009 | Women's Basketball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (2/28/09) ? The Princeton women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep after a 61-53 win over Yale on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Lee Amphitheater. The victory improves Princeton's record to 11-14 overall and 6-5 in the Ivy League.
The Tigers were paced by freshman Devona Allgood who picked up a double-double with a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Addie Micir had a career-high 10 rebounds and freshman Lauren Edwards added 13 points.
She also added three blocks and one assist. Freshman Lauren Edwards collected 13 points and had two steals and four rebounds.
"Devona had another great game for us," Coach Banghart said. "She is such a fierce competitor and continues to get better everyday. She holds herself to such a high standard of excellence, that we're just scratching the service of her potential."
"Yale came in and stole a win in Jadwin in the last seconds of the game just two weeks ago, so we were counting down the hours to get our revenge. What I'd say most of all is that we imposed our will to win for 40 minutes. I can't say enough about how hard this group of 14 play. We took a double-digit lead early and we're able to hold off their late run, which is something we've struggled with all year. The game got very physical in the second half but we stayed poised. This team is continuing to grow and get better- I'm loving coaching this group. Any win in the Ivy League is a great one- so to win two on the road makes us very happy."
The Tigers never trailed in the game, scoring the opening basket with a layup by Edwards. Princeton worked its way up to an 11-point lead after a three-pointer by freshman Laura Johnson to make it 17-6 at 8:03.
Yale responded with a 11-4 run to cut the lead back to four, 21-17, at 5:43. However, Princeton did let it rattle them as they held Yale without a basket for the next 3:41 and scored nine points to make it 30-17 with just over three minutes to play.
Edwards went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line at the one-minute mark to give the Tigers their largest lead of the game, 37-21. Yale closed out the half scoring five of the next seven points to set the first half score at 39-26.
The teams began the second half each scoring 13 points, to make it 52-39 at 15:11. After nearly four minutes without a basket, Micir drained a three to once again give the Tigers a 16-point lead, 55-39 at 11:22. Princeton and Yale continued to trade baskets and not allow any runs, as the Tigers maintained its 16-point edge with 5:40 to play.
Yale tried to muster a come back, going on an 8-0 run, sparked by 3-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line, to cut the lead to eight, 59-51 with 3:13 remaining.
Princeton wouldn't let its lead fall into Yale's hands as senior Whitney Downs stole the ball and dropped in layup at 1:04. Both teams missed chances and a turnover led to a Yale basket with 17 seconds left but the come back was too little, too late.
Yale, which falls to 11-15 and 4-8 in league play, was led by Melissa Colborne, who had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Yoyo Greenfield had 13 points and Mady Gobrecht had a team-high 0 rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 32.8 percent from the field, 91.7 percent from the free-throw line and 28.6 percent from long range.
As a team Princeton shot 37.5 percent, 76.9 percent from the charity
stripe and 20 percent from behind the arc. The Tigers won the battle on
the boards, 44-38.
