Women's Hoops Storms Back to Capture 68-63 Victory Over Columbia
March 07, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/7/09) ? Sophomore Addie Micir scored 23 points and freshman Devona Allgood picked up a double-double as the Princeton women's basketball team came back from a 14-point deficit to earn a 68-63 win over Columbia on Friday, March 6 at Jadwin Gym.
Tied at 63-63 with 37 seconds to play, Princeton called a timeout to work up a play. Senior Julia Berger made it run smooth as silk as she sent Allgood the ball inside the key and Allgood went up for the layup, dropped in the ball and was fouled. She nailed the free throw to make it 66-63. Columbia missed a three-point attempt on the next possession and Berger grabbed the defensive board. An in-bounds pass was sent to Allgood positioned under the basket, and Allgood put in the easy basket to ice the win, 68-63.
“Winning two straight close games shows we are still continuing to grow,” Coach Banghart said. “We were the aggressors in the second half and that is who we are. We talked at halftime about playing on both ends as one and when we do that we are tough to beat.
We haven't often been down big in a game. We had to chip away at it. We had to get stops and attack on the offensive end. It was a total team effort. I can't say enough about the contribution of Julia Berger. She had the game-winning assist, set the tone in terms of effort and willed us to win.”
The first half was all about trading runs. Princeton took a 9-0 lead 16:51 into the game before Columbia scored 10 unanswered to swing the lead in its favor. Princeton responded with a 9-0 run over the next 1:35 to regain the lead, 18-10. The Lions held the Tigers scoreless for the next 4:58 as they rattled off 15 points to earn a 25-18 edge with just over four minutes to play.
Micir ended the drought with a three at 4:14 but Columbia's Sara Yee answered back with one of her own 11 seconds later. Allgood put in a layup at 2:59 to make it 28-23 before Columbia closed out the half with seven straight to set the first half score at 35-23.
Ten seconds into the second half, Columbia held its largest lead of the game at 14 points, 37-25, before Princeton slowly began chipping away at the lead.
Two buckets by freshman Lauren Edwards brought the deficit to single digits at 14:33. The Tigers went 7-2 over the next minute and a half to make it a one-possession game, 47-45, at 12:20.
Micir and Hill combined for five points to gain a one-point advantage but Yee dropped in a three the next time down the court. Princeton got within one two more times over the next three minutes but Columbia wouldn't go away.
Micir finally broke down the Columbia defense with a jumper in the paint to give Princeton a one-point lead, 59-58, with 3:02 left to play. A free throw at 2:51 evened the game at 59-59. The teams traded baskets and with 37 seconds remaining the score remained tied, 63-63.
Micir tallied a game-high 23 points, coming just one basket shy of a personal best. Allgood scored 13 points and added a team-high 12 rebounds and three blocks. Lauren Edwards was also in double figures with 10 points. Senior Whitney Downs chipped in six rebounds and teammate Jessica Berry had five helpers.
Columbia was led by Judie Lomax who contributed 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Katrina Cragg picked up 11 points and Lauren Dwyer and Sara Yee each had 10 points.
Princeton improves to 12-14 overall and 7-5 in Ivy League play. Columbia falls to 13-14 and 6-7 in the conference. The Tigers take on Cornell at 6 p.m., tomorrow at Jadwin Gym. The Big Red fell 62-50 to Penn earlier this evening.
