Baseball Blanks Navy 4-0 in First Game of Doubleheader
March 21, 2009 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday at Navy, blanking the Midshipmen 4-0 in the opener and taking the nightcap 8-6. Junior David Hale pitched six shutout innings in the opener, while junior Jon Broscious had four hits and drove in two in the nightcap.
Game 1
Princeton plated three runs in the top of the first inning and added one in the seventh in a 4-0 shutout of Navy in the opening game. Hale pitched six shutout innings, allowing six hits and fanning six batters.
The Tigers scored four runs on 13 hits in building an early lead. Five Tigers had two hits in the win and the fifth, sixth and seventh batters in the Tigers lineup each drove in a run, led by junior Brian Berkowitz and senior Adrian Turnham who each had two hits and an RBI.
Princeton battled through an injury to open up a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Dan DeGeorge hit a one-out single to bring sophomore Greg Van Horn to the plate. During his at-bat, he fouled a ball off of his nose and was forced to leave the game. Sophomore Matt Connor stepped in as a pinch hitter and singled to push DeGeorge to third, and he scored from there on a wild pitch. Princeton then got singles from junior Jack Murphy, Berkowitz and junior Jon Broscious to put runners on push across two more runs.
Hale settled in from there in recording his first win of the season. His ERA remained 0.00 as he tossed six scoreless innings. Sophomore Matt Grabowski came on for the final inning and pitched around three singles to preserve the shutout.
Game 2
DeGeorge, Broscious and Connor each drove in two runs as the Tigers completed the sweep with an 8-6 win in the nightcap. The Tigers built a lead with four runs over the first three innings but fell behind when Navy plated five runs in the fifth inning. Princeton responded with three in the sixth and went on to the win.
Berckman led off the game for the Tigers and came around to score on a fielder's choice. Beckman started another rally two innings later when he bunted for a single. He scored on a Hale single and two more runs came home when Broscious singled through the infield.
After four strong innings, Navy got to senior starter Brad Gemberling in the fifth inning, scoring five times to take a 5-4 lead. The Tigers didn't trail long though as they plated three in the sixth to move back ahead. Connor hit a two-run single in the inning and DeGeorge doubled in a run. Princeton added its final run in the eighth when DeGeorge tripled home a run.
Gemberling improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed six runs in six innings while fanning nine Midshipmen. Freshman Ryan Makis got the save with three innings of hitless relief.
