Baseball Uses Five Run Eighth to Down Navy 5-2
March 22, 2009 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Sophomore David Palms pitched eight strong innings and the Tigers scored five runs in the eighth inning to lead the Princeton baseball team to a 5-2 win over Navy in the final game of a four-game series. Princeton took three of four games in the series.
For five innings, the story was pitching as Palms and Navy starter T.J. Kerins kept both offenses at bay. Navy scored the game's first run unearned in the bottom of the sixth to gain a 1-0 lead. Kerins then held Princeton at bay until he left the game after the seventh inning, but the Tigers got to reliever J.D. Melton in the eighth for eight runs, all of which were unearned.
Princeton began the inning by loading the bases without a hit thanks to fielding error and a walk. Senior Derek Beckman came to the plate to bunt the runners over, but another error by Navy loaded the bases instead. A sac fly scored Princeton first run and another walk reloaded the bases for junior Brian Berkowitz, who delivered a bases-clearing double to left center. Berkowitz then came around to score on a single from senior Adrian Turnham.
Navy got another run in the bottom of the eighth, but could draw no closer. Palms allowed one earned run over eight innings. He scattered six hits and struck out five for the win. Sophomore Matt Grabowski pitched around a one-out double for the save.
Princeton is now 7-5 on the season and returns home from Spring Break. The Tigers' home opener comes Tuesday afternoon against Rutgers at 3:30 p.m.
