Women's Water Polo Heads to Eastern Championships This Weekend
April 23, 2009 | Women's Water Polo
The Princeton women's water polo team travels to Harvard this weekend for the 2009 CWPA Eastern Championships. Princeton, which has finished in the top three at Easterns in each of the last three seasons, enters the tournament as the seventh seed and will meet Michigan in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
Princeton advances to the Eastern Championship for the 13th season in a row as the Tigers have qualified for the CWPA's Championship event every season since becoming a varsity program in 1997. Princeton is 15-12 overall this season and finished third in the Southern regular season. Last weekend Princeton edged Southern second-seed Bucknell 10-9 in overtime in the Southern semifinals to advance to the division's championship game last weekend. The Tigers eventually fell to Maryland in the Southern title game last weekend, but in reaching the championship game, assured themselves of the trip to Easterns.
Princeton is currently 15-12 overall after last weekend's win and loss. The Tigers went 3-6 against the Eastern field this season with wins over Brown, Harvard and Bucknell.
The Tigers have faired well at Easterns over the past three seasons, placing second once and third the other times. In 2006 the Tigers fell to Michigan in the semifinals but edged Bucknell in the third-place game. A year later, Princeton edged Michigan in the semifinals, but fell to Hartwick in the title game. Then last year, the Tigers fell to Michigan in the semifinals and edged Maryland for third place.
The Tigers have drawn Michigan in the Eastern semifinals for each of the past four seasons and have a 1-3 record in those games. This year Princeton is assured of not facing Michigan in the semifinals because the teams will meet in the quarterfinals.
Michigan won the CWPA's western division and is the second seed for the Eastern Championships. The Wolverines are the nation's 12th-ranked team and are currently 30-8 overall. The reigning conference champions defeated Princeton 12-5 on March 1 in the only meeting of the season between the two teams.
