Princeton and Cornell Split Doubleheader; Remain Tied Atop Division

Junior David Hale pitched the Princeton baseball team to a 2-0 win in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader with Cornell, but Big Red starter Corey Pappal pitched a gem in the nightcap as the teams split the doubleheader. The teams remain tied in the Gehrig standings with two games to play.
Game 1

Junior David Hale struck out 10 over six and a third innings to shut down Cornell in a 2-0 Tiger win in the opening game. Junior Brian Berkowitz gave the Tigers the only run they would need with a second-inning solo home run.
Hale got the day started by striking out the side in the first inning and was solid throughout. After allowing two on the in the seventh inning with one out, sophomore Matt Grabowski came on for his fourth save of the season. Hale finished the game allowing four hits en route to his second win of the season.
The Tigers managed three hits off of Cornell starter Jadd Schmeltzer in the 2-0 win. Berkowitz hit a solo homer in the second inning to give the Tigers a lead and Princeton scored again in the fourth inning when senior Adrian Turnham walked, went to third on sophomore Matt Connor's single and scored on a wild pitch. Senior Dan DeGeorge had Princeton's third hit.

Cornell's Corey Pappal had an impressive outing in the second game as he held Princeton to three hits and a run over eight innings while striking out nine. Princeton senior starter Brad Gemberling struck out 13 in seven and two-thirds innings but was tagged four runs and the loss.
Cornell scored the first run of the game in the fifth when Nate David led off with a double and scored on Adam Jacobs' sac fly. Princeton answered back in the bottom of the inning when senior Derek Beckman's infield single plated Turnham.
The Big Red went ahead in the following inning with three runs all on Domenic Di Ricco's blast over the shrubs to right field. With one out, Mickey Brodsky singled and Frank Hager walked to put two aboard for Hager.
Gemberling struck out 13 for the second game in a row but fell to 5-2 with the loss.

The teams remain tied in the Gehrig Division standings with two games remaining on Sunday at Cornell. If either team sweeps the doubleheader that team will claim the Gehrig crown. Should the teams split, there will be a playoff. Columbia, two games back, is also still alive in the race for a three-way tie.
